Social and Emotional Learning: Ocean State Montessori

At Ocean State Montessori, a child’s first lesson isn’t necessarily their ABCs and 123s. The Montessori philosophy revolves around creating a community and helping students function within and contribute to that community. Amy Andrews, head of school at Ocean State Montessori says that starts with the concept of Grace and Respect, which students encounter when they walk in the school door each day. “Students are greeted with a smile and an extended hand for a handshake. Teachers squat to meet them at their level and make eye contact. And every day is a new day, no matter what the previous day held.”

There are two rules at Ocean State, referred to as their community agreement: be safe and be respectful. By teaching children these concepts, they can effectively function in a community, which ultimately helps them learn and support their classmates in their learning. “When you have a functioning agreement,” Andrews says, “that’s when amazing learning can take place.”

Care for yourself. Be aware of others. Respect those around you. The innovation here is a return to the basics. By mastering baby steps, students at Andrews’ school can soar.
