Triangle Trade

Although RI was the first of the 13 colonies to pass a law abolishing slavery, it took a while for that law to be enforced. In the 1700s, the colony’s economy depended heavily on the triangle trade. Rhode Islanders made rum from molasses, sent the rum to Africa where it was traded for slaves, then traded the slaves in the West Indies for molasses, continuing the cycle.
