KA-POW! Rhode Island’s Comic Relief: GET SOME!

tcc My comic collecting began on a crap Monday. I decided the Deftones’ White Pony, some overly sweet Moscato and a few comics would cheer me up. Getting home and decompressing, I was reminded how much I enjoy the tangible paper love every turn of a comic book’s page gave me. How easily I turned into a hero or villain, while being painfully aware I was just a girl at home sipping wine and listening to “Knife Party.”

Too many people disregard books, comics and original material and just go straight to the movies. But some characters or character traits exist in the comics, but do not translate to the film or television series. “The Walking Dead” is a prime example of this. So get out there and get some comics, people!

“Some people say, ‘Why read a comic book? It stifles the imagination. If you read a novel you imagine what people are like. If you read a comic, it’s showing you.’ The only answer I can give is, ‘You can read a Shakespeare play, but does that mean you wouldn’t want to see it on stage?’” – Stan Lee

BAM!

Stan Lee is revered creator of superheroes like Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and X-Men for Marvel Comics. Sadly, Lee is making his last New England appearance ever at this year’s RI Comic Con, and my job as WonderWhatWho is to get you up to speed on the local places where you can grab some key issues before bumping into Mr. Lee … or get you to stop crying about “The Walking Dead.”

Vintage Comics,Though! What Is the Gold and Silver Age I’m Seeing?

The Golden and Silver ages in vintage comics from the 1930s to 1960s have become the most collectible among comicheads. Robert Yeremian, owner of The Time Capsule, has a great selection of these specific comics, which he adds to constantly. Just starting your collection? I suggest holding off on these vintage bad boys and just buying what you enjoy, but you can admire them on the shelf! Or bring a vintage to show Stan Lee.tcc2

BOOM!

All stores listed have a excitingly wide variety of single issue and complete trade paperbacks (full collection editions). From current cult-classics — even Cartoon Network’s Powerpuff Girls — and vintage comics to the classic favorites from Marvel and DC, they are all found in these local gems.

I’m about to take you to a place where comic universes might swallow you up. Maybe Snapchat your friends so they don’t miss you for 5 seconds?
