The Amos House is hosting their 7th annual key festival, Get Gored For Good, on April 28 to benefit the Amos House. Inspired by Spain’s Running of the Bulls, the women of Providence Roller Derby are returning with horns and red war paint to act as charging bulls while runners dash through Downcity to the finish line.
The Amos House has been combating hunger and homelessness in Rhode Island since 1976. The nonprofit not only provides housing for 175 people per night, but has the largest soup kitchen in the state. In addition, the center hosts job training, education and employment services for the community. The Amos House helps more than 15,000 people a year.
Eileen Hayes, president and CEO of Amos House, is excited to see the outcome of this year’s fundraiser. “Get Gored For Good is a special opportunity for Providence to come together in a fun way to support our mission to reduce hunger and homelessness,” she explained. Lisa Kellogg, a returning race participant, is exhilarated to take part in this year’s charity event. “Prior to attending a few years ago, I thought of Amos House as a homeless shelter/soup kitchen. But they actually transform lives. Families are reunited, new job skills lead to employment and the transitional/ permanent housing offers safe space and stability,” she explained.
Registration is open for both races. Adults and children can sign up for either race or both for one flat fee of $40 per adult and $20 per child under 14. Registration and warm-up begins at 8am. The 5k starts at 9am and the obstacle course begins at 10am. Immediately following, an all-ages after-party with food, drinks and games will take place at Burnside Park.
