LUNA LOBA: El Azufre [The Sulfur Moon]

For almost two years, As220’s new creative director, Shey Rivera, has been the curator of a quarterly event called “Luna Loba.” Centered around the subthemes of transformation, hunt, shamanism and the wild and wilderness, LUNA LOBA focuses on the work of female and gender neutral artists. I have seen anywhere from six to 12 artists stretch for two to five minutes the mediums of performance art, readings, voice, body and video.

Shey says, “After this event featuring male and male-identified artists, the next three LUNA LOBAS for this year will continue focusing on the work of female and gender neutral artists, as usual. But this is the new season of LUNA LOBA. Twelve artists will present performance, sound, body and voice rituals, in homage to the full moon.

“Sulfur is transformation; it consumes all and the phoenix rises from the ashes. Sulfur is reactive; both weapon and medicine. This is the first of a new season of four annual LUNA LOBA events. We celebrate Ares, Roman deity of War; and Chango, Yoruba deity of Thunder and Drums.Performances will include dance, video, spoken word, and performance art, among other disciplines.”

The artists [12 lobos] (more to be confirmed) are Sokeo Ros, Christopher Johnson, Eli V Manuscript, Orlando Hernandez, Vatic Kuumba, Ronald Lewis, Kufa Castro, Saul Ramos,Benjamin Lundberg, Jason Curzake and Umberto Crenca.
