A mix of chamber pop, psychedelia and folk to go along with a reoccurring orchestral touch, All Walls from Los Angeles are getting groovy with their self-titled debut that’s officially due out on August 14 via indie label Silver Side. The duo of Keith Waggoner and Samson Crouppen are also part of a larger collective known as Holy Folk, which explains all of the multiple dimensions and collaborations in their upcoming release. The variety of All Walls’ debut exudes originality and definite coolness, each track is a new experience that you’ll want to hear over and over again. This album might float under the radar for a while but it’s a diamond in the rough that you’re gonna tell all your friends about after you press play.
Some songs sound like a bluegrass group playing in a barn while a few others take you on a time traveling expedition back to the 60’s. Wearing tie dye, gigantic sunglasses and funky shoes while on the beach. A wide array of instruments are abundant as well, you got violins, ukeleles and xylophones going along with the guitars, basses and drums. When I say there’s variety in All Walls’ debut I mean it, there are even a couple instrumentals that’ll captivate you. It’ll all come at you in various ways, but you’ll welcome it with open arms.
Now I know what you’re probably thinking. If this particular album isn’t coming out until next month, why write about it now? Well, I got it in my mailbox this week, I like it a lot, with the way 2015 has been so far there are going to be a bunch of other great albums coming out in August and it’s my review column so I can pretty much write about whatever I want. Guess you’ll just have to put up with it, just like my top tracks off of the Album Of The Week:
One of the many reasons why All Walls has such a groovy sound, “New Vibration” got some fuzzy soul with killer vocals and the guitar having a pristinely distorted quality that you gotta love. “Pilgrimage” starts the album off in a wonderful way, a chamber pop introduction that has a drum beat putting a big smile on your face. Sounding like something straight out of a campfire, “Comfy Soul” has a harmonica sound that sits right on top of the musical excellence like a nice garnish on a delicious dish.
All Walls got a couple shows in The City Of Angels over the next few months, playing La Cita on August 25 and El Cid on September 12. Lets hope Waggoner & Crouppen make their way over to the East Coast and grace New England with their presence soon. Until then, get their debut when it’s released on August 14. It’s all over the place musically, but it’s going to make you feel just right when you listen.
