2 Feet 2 Bucks to Bristol

The fall colors linger longest near the sea.

When you hear, “Let’s take a hike,” you probably picture an uninhabited area. There’s nothing like a walk in the woods, the more unspoiled the better. The landscape we encounter day-to-day seems to prove any place not the woods is too spoiled to want to be outdoors in. But while uninhabited places are unspoiled (duh), “inhabited” need not always mean “spoiled.”

Long ago but not far away, people inhabited beautiful lands and did not spoil them, creating remarkable surroundings in which to take long walks today. 2 Feet 2 Bucks finds and maps these overlooked, in-between places for your walking pleasure. If you do all your hiking way out in the woods, you will miss much of the beauty and fascination to be enjoyed in Rhode Island.

You can’t know Bristol if all you did there is drive around. The streets and byways on this map abound in charm only revealed up-close and slowly: Details on crisply painted, unique old houses, odd ornaments cleverly set in every sort of garden; mature trees framing views of sparkling water and distant shores, broad fields and miles of accessible waterfront. There is no end of scenes worthy of calendars and picture postcards.

Walking as much as your stamina permits is slow food for sightseers. However many miles you care to walk in a day, Bristol is the perfect place to do it. Bring a picnic or save your appetite for the dining treat of your choice. It is by far the prettiest town anywhere that you can take a bus or bike to.
