Succotash

373 Richmond St

succotashSuccotash has filled the barren space on Richmond Street that was once The Apartment (yes, the bathtub is gone). The eatery adds a new element to the block occupied by Rick’s Roadhouse, Blount’s Clam Shack and Olga’s Cup and Saucer. The self-proclaimed, “Bar-Bruncheonette-Cafe,” is just what it claims to be.

Bar: At this point in the game, it would be bar-suicide to open in RI without a decent craft and local selection. Their 16 drafts include Revival, Foolproof, Goose Island, Shed Mountain and Strongbow to name a few, in addition to almost 50 bottled selections. Cocktails are fresh and original with a summer twist, hold the heavy, syrupy mixers. The Lemon Basil Gimlet (Vodka, basil and lemon) has a pleasantly bitter taste without an overwhelming garden-flavor or the sharp after-bite of vodka. Another bar-favorite is the Blueberry Mint Lemonade, made with homemade lemonade. The bar also serves an assortment of wines and beertails.

Bruncheonette: Though the restaurant has post-noon eating options, the menu is breakfast heavy. Specialties include banana waffles, chicken and waffles, a lobster omlette, s’mores and french toast, along with diner-style classics. The dark, cozy feel that The Apartment occupied has been brightened and the space opened for a morning-time vibe. Dining also expanded to a full-sized outdoor patio.

Cafe: Rivaling Olga’s next door, Succotash specializes in carry-out cafe style breakfast – pastries, bagels, muffins and of course, coffee and espresso. In addition to traditional items, the cafe serves fresh-squeezed juices and smoothies such as the Bluegrass: Celery, cucumber, apple, lime, spinach and parsley.
