Got Beer?

Horny for Hops: Spring beers to drink while you are in heat

Do you find yourself peeling off more beer labels when spring comes around? You’re not alone. This is known as a sign of sexual frustration or, if you are me, it is also a sign that you keep beer labels in a scrapbook. This increased appetite for fornication is probably because you are getting more sunlight. Increased exposure can increase your serotonin levels. This not only makes you happier, but hornier. Spring is time to stop dry humping and start hop humping! Where do I go when I am in heat? I go to a brewery! This is what led me to Canned Heat Brewery. Is there anything better to put some fuel to your fire than a brewery called Canned Heat?
Located in a place previously used to can refined oil, this Fall River brewery is only about 14 miles from Rhode Island. The brewery vibe is unpretentious and inviting. The decor is retro-meets-dive bar. That’s hot, isn’t it? When I walked in, I saw a group of babes barred up, drinking pints; Keith Carvalho, the owner of Troy City Brewing, Justin Holmander, head brewer of Canned Heat, Stephen Sherman II, production manager of Canned Heat, and Ed Czyrklis, production staff of Canned Heat. This is what is amazing about the beer community: There’s no competition, only support and friendships between breweries. I had the pleasure of meeting Justin and Stephen previously at Beervana Fest. I was welcomed like a friend and am truly thankful for this. These two men are not only easy on the eyes but are charismatic, friendly and engaging.
Stephen studied the craft of making beer at Johnson and Wales, as well as the Brewlab in the United Kingdom. He described the UK as where he got his “foot in the industry.” He also worked at Foolproof Brewery. Justin is a Bryant University grad. He was the former assistant brewer at State Line Brewing, manufacturing technician at The Guild in Pawtucket, and studied the craft of making beer at Siebel Institute.
After getting a tour of the brewery, we all sat down for some banter and beer. What a way to spend a Friday night! Being single certainly has its perks! Me, being the shy person I am, asked these two pieces of eye candy what beer they drink when they are in “heat.”
Stephen confidently answered me, “1745 Kölsch because it is clean, crisp, dependable and always guaranteed to be on tap.” After trying this myself I would agree. This beer pours a golden hue and has a thick frothy head. The back aroma and flavors are of malt, spice, slight citrus, and a smooth balanced bitterness that makes this easy to drink. This 4.9% German-style Kölsch is like coming home to a quick lay from your better half at the end of a long day. You know it’s always going to be good and just what you need.
One of the beers Justin mentioned was the Farmhouse Wheat Ale called “Millsaw.” His description was inviting: “This wild ale is liberating and it’s a different experience every time you have it. It evolves over time. It has two sides. It has Norwegian yeast and Belgian Cloves with lemongrass and orange peel.” This sounds like a redhead and blond doesn’t it? It is described on Canned Heat’s website as an ale that “ends dry and entices you for another sip.” This two headed siren is full of surprises. As Justin stated, it “appears intimidating, but once you start drinking it, you realize it is easy going.” Did that just describe me? I think so.
Ever have a bed partner that is so good that you hide their car keys so you can have them a little while longer? That’ll have them asking “Where’s the Freakin Clickah?” My answer to that is on my lips preferably. In case you were wondering what Canned Heat beer can quench my hoppy appetite, it is just that. “Where’s the Freakin Clickah?” is a NEIPA. It has a sweet tropical fruit flavor along with some citrus and a slight bitter grapefruit taste on the back end of the palate. With an ABV of 6.6%, this golden hazy goes down easy. I have had this NEIPA hop boy many times and my favorite way is on draft.
What are you going to do with all this sexual tension? Take a cold shower? Meditate?
My advice is instead of curbing your spring inferno, try some self love. Pour yourself a pint of pleasure from Canned Heat and enjoy yourself!

Beer + Tattoos!

This month Motif has chosen to highlight their Tattoo Awards. The picture included here is of myself and a few of my friends having a pint out. Coincidentally, the artist behind some of the beautiful tattoos pictured here is the talented Joey Moreira. Joey happens to be the artist who did the cover for this issue of Motif. Joey owns Renaissance Tattoo and Cloud 9 Tattoo. I had the opportunity to talk to Joey: “Art has always been my passion. I can’t remember a time when I was not drawing, doodling and creating. After seeing a tattoo done for the first time, I knew it was something I had to do.” This dream of his was put on the back burner for about sixteen years while he was on a different career path. With the support of family and friends his dream of tattooing came true six years ago.
What is his favorite thing about tattooing? “Getting to meet people from all walks of life. Getting to sit and talk for hours. Getting to know each other.” Joey went on to say that the stories shared, the inspiration and the friendships made are truly amazing. “It’s dope to tattoo a doctor, lawyer, mayor, nurse, athlete, musician, etc.” Joey explained that “Tattooing is so much more than art.” Truly, his passion shows behind his amazing artwork. Joey, if you are reading this, maybe you can add a registered dietitian to the list of dope people you have tattooed. I would be so very honored!
