Hiya! I’m the Art Director for Motif, doubling as the cover artist for this issue. Here’s a little dispatch from my side of things. The themes for this issue morphed several times, as spring sprang, events settled into the schedule, and articles rolled in. While I trust the artists of this fine state to go with the flow, I would hate to lob new changes at an illustrator every few days. So I decided to keep it simple and do what I do best: scribble a gnarly, twisty creature into existence. Well, maybe a creature – is it living? What has a mouth, several necks, and one horn? If you’re alone with a stack of magazines, does it make a sound? What kind of riddle is this?? I hope it has, at least, grabbed your attention. Made you go “Whoa, what?” and pick it up. That’s my goal with every Motif cover I commission. There are fewer illustrations gracing magazine covers nowadays, so I love that I get to work with such awesome artists and flood the public with their creations every two weeks. My inspiration folder for layouts & such is called “Get Funky With It.” Boy, will I try. And so should you!
