Providence Roller Derby’s all-star travel team, the Rhode Island Riveters, closed out April by catapulting up 16 spots on the WFTDA rankings to #85 thanks to the three out of four victories over Granite State, Burning River and Suburbia. The toughest battles were fought against D.C. as the Riveters and the Killah Bees (PRD’s B Team) both lost. However, the biggest wins were for both teams against Suburbia’s Suburban Brawl and the Backyard Bullies. The Riveters annihilated 56-338 and the Bees crushed 81-315.
During May, Riveters and Bees combined went 1 out of 4 between Rochester and Garden State. The Riveters just fell short in a close bout against the Roc Stars 143-168 and against GS’s Ironbound Maidens 106-110. The Bees took a hard hit from GS’s Brick City Bruisers 115-171, but conquered Roc City’s B-Sides 294-120. Currently the 2016 Riveters have three wins and four losses; meanwhile, the Bees are at four wins and two losses.
The Riveters will wrap up this season away against Vermont’s Green Mountain on June 4. The Bees will travel south to Feasterville, Pennsylvania, on June 17 for this year’s East Coast Derby Extravaganza to compete against two teams to be announced.
After the travel season wraps up, the always-anticipated home season begins. Locations are soon to be announced, but the dates are already set. On July 16, last year’s champions, the Sakonnet River Roller Rats, will take on the Mob Squad. On August 13, the Mob will battle it out with the Old Money Honeys. Then on September 10, the Honeys will meet the Rats leading to this year’s championship bout in October. For information and tickets, go to PRD’s Facebook or ProvidenceRollerDerby.com.
