The national tour of SOME LIKE IT HOT is coming to the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) in less than two weeks! Performances start on Tuesday, April 22 and continue through Sunday, April 27, 2025.
SOME LIKE IT HOT is based on the 1959 film starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. The original movie Some Like It Hot has been recognized by numerous publications as one of the 100 Greatest Movies of All Time.
Playwright Matthew López (The Inheritance) and comedian Amber Ruffin (“The Amber Ruffin Show”) co-wrote the musical’s book, reimaging the story for contemporary theatregoers. The show’s book, spectacular dance numbers, and visually impressive costume and set designs received high praise from New York critics. The Associated Press described it as “a glorious, big, high-kicking musical that flips the original film on its head” and Deadline said it’s a “toe-tapping, razzle-dazzling embrace of everything you love about musical theater.” Wow!
SOME LIKE IT HOT won four Tony Awards, including Best Choreography and Best Costumes, and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. Marc Shaiman composed brand new music for the show and co-wrote lyrics with Scott Wittman; some of the song titles are “What Are You Thirsty For?”, “Take It Up a Step”,
“You Coulda Knocked Me Over with a Feather” and of course, “Some Like it Hot.”
The national tours stars Matt Loehr as Joe/Josephine and Tavis Kordell as Jerry/Daphne. Leandra Ellis-Gaston portrays Sugar, the role originally played by Marilyn Monroe.
The other principle cast members are Edward Juvier as Osgood, Tarra Conner Jones as Sweet Sue, Jamie LaVerdiere as Mulligan, Devon Goffman (previously on the PPAC stage in Jersey Boys) as Spats, and Devon Hadsell, a former member of the original Broadway company, as Minnie.
Set in Chicago where Prohibition has everyone thirsty for a little excitement, SOME LIKE IT HOT tells the story of two musicians who are forced to flee the Windy City after witnessing a mob hit. With gangsters hot on their heels, they catch a cross-country train for the life-chasing, life-changing trip of a lifetime.
SOME LIKE IT HOT is part of the Taco and The White Family Foundation Broadway Series.
Tickets are available at the PPAC Box Office (220 Weybosset Street), online at ppacri.org and by phone at 401.421.ARTS (2787).
