Who said romance was dead?: Here’s some ways you can treat yourself for Valentine’s Day.

It’s that time of year again, where love is in the air and the stores are filled with as much chocolate as the eye can see. Typically it’s considered a holiday where you spend time with another, gifting your loved ones chocolate and other treats. Many spend it with a romantic partner, while some who are single call it “Single Awareness Day.” Other countries even have their own Valentine’s Day parallel, like the warm springtime holiday “White Day” in Japan. High school sweethearts, secret admirers, love letters, and more are all the rage this time of year. But what happens if you aren’t in a romantic relationship?

Many just simply gift their families, co-workers, or classmates cute little treats. But once the day is over, it’s common to simply spend private time or go on a date with a romantic partner. Despite the romance associated with Valentine’s Day, it’s perfectly acceptable and even healthy to instead focus on loving that often neglected loved one in your life; yourself. Here we’re going to go over multiple different ways you can enjoy Valentine’s Day this year.

Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday this year, making it the perfect time to go out and enjoy yourself. Even if you’re alone or with some friends, there’s plenty of places around Providence to have some lovely fun. The Providence Ice Skating Rink nearby Kennedy Plaza is a perfect date, regardless if you’re in a romantic relationship or just want to spend some fun time alone or with loved ones. They even have little snow bumper cars if you’re not too enthusiastic about hopping on some skates. You can visit their website at theprovidencerink.com.

Providence Place Mall right next door is also a perfect follow up to some time on the rink. Level 99 in the mall is a great place to bring some friends to play some games, and they even have food to boot, if you’re not interested in grabbing some cheesecake at the Cheesecake Factory.

But what if you’re a homebody? There are plenty of ways to enjoy Valentine’s Day privately behind closed doors. These past few years, “Paint and Sip” nights have gotten VERY popular, where you can drink some delicious wine and paint some fresh new masterpieces. You can either buy some paint and alcohol and paint in your house, or you can stop by at a venue like Muse Paint Bar on North Main Street, PVD. You can even toss in some chocolate covered strawberries as well.

Valentine’s Day is overall a day where you’re supposed to love – and that includes yourself. As a result, there’s nothing wrong with simply taking that day to treat yourself with what makes you happy and comfortable. If you’re not too keen on being out and about, buy yourself some of your favorite foods, deserts, and stay home. Art supply stores such as Blick have fun little kits to make your own Valentine’s Day themed crafts from crochet to jewelry making.

At the end of the day, how you celebrate Valentine’s Day is also special to you. Sometimes the best way to love yourself is booting up a game with friends online, or just talking to your friends as you watch your favorite shows. Love language can take many forms, and it’s always important to know the love language to your heart. Ask yourself; what’s the best way I can love myself for Valentine’s Day? Then do it. It’s as simple as that.
