LA EXITOSA MAGIA DEL TEATRO ECAS/ THE SUCCESSFUL MAGIC OF THE ECAS THEATER

Hace año y medio tuve la oportunidad de entrevistar a Francis Parra Guerra, la Directora Ejecutiva y Artística del Teatro ECAS. Días antes de que se abrieran las puertas de lo que se convertiría en el primer hogar propio y permanente de la compañía teatral hispanohablante, camine con Francis hablando sobre la trayectoria y la misión del teatro. En ese entonces, (abril del 2023), Francis mencionó que para ella el propósito de todo era darles al público, actores y dramaturgos, la oportunidad de ver “lo nuestro”, de ver historias sobre América Latina y de sentirse reflejados en ellas. Y no solo eso, sino también crear un espacio educativo donde todos, (los que hablan español y los que no), puedan aprender de una manera enriquecedora, sobre la enormidad y diversidad de la historia y cultura Latina. Cómo bien dice la misión, esta entidad artística busca “fomentar el autodescubrimiento y la conexión cultural”… dentro de la comunidad urbana multicultural en Providence y más allá. También existe “un especial énfasis en que niños y adultos jóvenes… descubran sus talentos ocultos y desarrollen confianza en sí mismos.” Personalmente, tuve la fortuna de apreciar la misión del teatro en carne propia. Compartí con una amiga que no habla español- una parte significativa de mi niñez- al ver al actor de telenovelas Francisco Gattorno sobre el escenario (quien formó nuevamente parte del elenco del teatro con la obra “Ternura” en Marzo del presente). El Teatro ECAS, (que presenta obras totalmente en español con supertitulos en inglés), creó un puente que conectó mis identidades y le mostró un poco más a mi amiga, de mi auténtico ser- un ser bilingüe y bicultural. Y bueno, desde ese entonces, el Teatro ECAS ha tenido un éxito rotundo. Después de 27 años de existencia, ECAS sigue conquistando a nuevas audiencias, y recogiendo reconocimientos. Además de ser parte de la lista de galardonados de Best of RI, el teatro fue el único teatro de Nueva Inglaterra en recibir la subvención de la Iniciativa Nacional de Teatro Latinx (National Latinx Theater Initiative Grant). Asimismo, en agosto de este año, Providence Business News reveló su lista de las compañías de mayor crecimiento e innovación (Fastest Growing & Innovative Companies), y en esa lista se encontraba el Teatro ECAS.

Mayté Antelo-Ovando (Motif): ¿Cuáles son algunos de los ingredientes de tantos éxitos y crecimiento?

Francis Parra Guerra: El teatro en español ha estado por más de 25 años en RI y realmente ya era hora de tener un espacio digno para recibir a todas las comunidades. Creo que este ha sido el principal motor para recibir los reconocimientos.

MO: La última vez que hablamos mencionaste que en el teatro habría eventos además de obras de teatro. Habrían diálogos, talleres, hasta un café y galería de arte, ¿todo eso ha pasado, y más?

FPG: Una vez quedó abierta la sala de teatro hemos tenido otras instituciones que también traen sus producciones a Teatro ECAS, entre estas tenemos a Teatro Círculo con la obra La Caida de Trujillo, Noche de Ópera y Boleros, Pecha Kucha, Exhibición de Buena Grafica Printing, Exposición de Libro del dramaturgo Hector Romero y Exhibición de Arte de los pintores Francisco Hernandez y Agonza.

MO: ¿Qué sigue y qué obra viene en los próximos meses?

FPG: Estamos felices de traer una vez más la producción, Tres Patines y La Tremenda Corte, con un elenco nuevo y que les hará reír sin parar… Tres Patines continúa siendo un personaje adorable porque es muy genuino. Sé que nuestro público apreciará la oportunidad de disfrutar de esta comedia que saca la risa hasta al más serio. Y [también] tendremos [la obra] infantil, La Cuesta Mágica, un espectáculo navideño para toda la familia. •

En Tres Patines y La Tremenda Corte, el Teatro ECAS rinde homenaje a uno de los comediantes más destacados de América Latina, Leopoldo Fernández, cuyo alter ego, el desventurado José Candelario (Tres Patines) entretuvo a generaciones de latinoamericanos en todo el mundo. About a year and a half ago, I had the opportunity to interview Francis Parra Guerra, the Executive Artistic Director of Teatro ECAS. Days before the doors of this Spanish-language theater company’s first-ever permanent home would open, I took a walk inside with Francis. We talked about the company’s trajectory and mission. At the time (in April of 2023), Francis mentioned that for her, the purpose of the theater was to provide the audience, the actors, and the playwrights with the opportunity to see “lo nuestro” (“what’s ours”), to see Latin American stories and feel reflected in them, but to also create an educational space for everyone (Spanish-speaking and non-Spanish speaking alike), to learn in an enriching way – about the vastness and diversity of the Latine culture. As the mission states, this artistic entity seeks to “foster self-discovery and cultural connection” within the urban multicultural community in PVD and beyond. “Special emphasis is also placed in supporting children and young adults in discovering their hidden talents and developing their self-confidence.” Personally, I had the fortune of experiencing the theater’s mission firsthand. I shared a meaningful piece of my childhood with a non-Spanish speaking friend when we saw soap opera actor Francisco Gattorno on stage (he was part of an ECAS cast once more when he performed in the play “Ternura,” in March). The theater (showing plays in Spanish with English supertitles) created a bridge between my identities. It allowed me to show my friend more of my authentic self, a bilingual and bicultural self. Since then, the ECAS Theater has had resounding success. After 27 years, ECAS continues to bring in new audience members and amass recognition. In addition to being on the Best of Rhode Island list, the theater company was the only one in New England to receive the National Latinx Theater Initiative Grant. Also, in August, the Providence Business News unveiled its list of Fastest Growing & Innovative Companies, and ECAS Theater was included.

Mayté Antelo-Ovando (Motif): What are some ingredients of your success and growth?

Francis Parra Geurra: This Spanish-language theater has been a part of RI for more than 25 years, and it was really time to have a worthy space to welcome all of the communities in our sphere. I feel like this has been the main driver for all of the recognition we’ve received.

MO: Last time we spoke, you mentioned there would be events besides plays hosted in the theater space. There would be dialogues, workshops, an art gallery, even a café; has this happened? Or perhaps more?

FPG: Once the theater space opened, we hosted and continued to host other institutions that bring their own productions to the ECAS Theater. We’ve had Teatro Círculo with the play La Caída de Trujillo, Noche de Ópera y Boleros, Pecha Kucha, the Buena Grafica Printing Exhibition, a Book Exhibition with Hector Romero, and an Art Exhibit for painters Francisco Hernandez and Agonza.

MO: What’s next? What plays are coming in the next few months?

FPG: We’re very excited to bring back the theater production Tres Patines y La Tremenda Corte with a new cast that will make you laugh nonstop. Tres Patines continues to be a loveable character because he is so genuine. We will also have the children’s play, La Cuesta Mágica, a Christmas show for the whole family. •

With Tres Patines y La Tremenda Corte, the ECAS Theater pays tribute to one of Latin America’s most beloved comedians, Leopoldo Fernández, whose alter ego, the hapless José Candelario (Tres Patines) entertained generations of Latin Americans all over the world.
