There is such a whole mess of amazing things going on in Pawtucket and I am almost ready to move there. But no need. It is just “up the way” from Providence and I just discovered a café with a cause: LIFE Café. A former garage has blossomed into a vibrant café, where the aroma of freshly brewed coffee (the best smell, ever) mingles with the even sweeter scent of opportunity. This innovative space is the latest venture from LIFE Inc, a nonprofit organization that has enriched RI’s East Bay community since 1986 and is now reaching farther.
The café, which opened its doors in August 2024, represents more than just another coffee shop in the neighborhood. It’s a testament to the power of collaboration and community vision, born from a partnership between LIFE Inc., and Shri Yoga. The mission? To create meaningful workforce training opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, focusing on the art of barista service and customer service. “We identified a clear need in our community,” explains Liz Wiedenhofer, executive director of LIFE Inc. The expansion of services outside of the East Bay area, where the nonprofit is based, is due to a long-standing collaboration with property owner Alison Bologna. The café finds its home in the up-and-coming Pine Street Project, a hub of community service that already houses several mission-driven organizations, the Segue Institute for Learning‘s food pantry, and the Flying Shuttles art studio.
Step inside the café, and you’ll find yourself in a space that radiates an upbeat vibe. When the weather warms up – and it will in just a couple of months – outdoor seating will be perfect on the streetside patio area. The former garage has been transformed into a homey space. But it’s not just the ambiance that caught my attention – it’s the stomach-growling options on the menu. The star of the show? Build-your-own breakfast sammie that invites customers to create their perfect masterpiece. Picture this: perfectly grilled griddle cakes layered with creamy gouda cheese, eggs, crispy bacon, and velvety avocado. Pair that with a crisp apple and a steaming cup of expertly prepared coffee, and you’ve got breakfast nirvana. Got yourself more of a sweet tooth instead of a savory experience? The café has you covered with freshly baked muffins, cookies, and – in a delightful local touch – doughnuts from RI’s own Knead Doughnuts.
But the real magic happens behind the counter. The café serves as a training ground where participants, referred through community partners like Central Falls High School and Pawtucket High School, embark on a three-tosix-month journey learning the ins and outs of food service. Under the guidance of professional staff, these trainees don’t just learn just the technical skills of crafting the perfect cup of coffee; they also develop valuable on-the-job experience and workplace confidence. The program doesn’t end when training does. LIFE Inc. goes the extra mile by providing job placement assistance to graduates, helping them transition into other positions in the community. It’s a holistic approach that transforms lives – one latte at a time.
Recently expanding its hours to operate from 7:30am to 3:30pm, six days a week, the café is sure to become a community fixture. Whether you’re on your way to hop on the train or looking to linger over lunch with your bestie, this could be your new go-to spot in the neighborhood. The café’s success is made possible through a combination of menu sales and support from The Fogarty Foundation and Moran-Ventre Foundation. This sustainable model ensures that while customers enjoy their morning coffee, they’re simultaneously supporting a vital community initiative. Looking ahead, the future appears as bright as the café’s cheerful interior. Plans are already in motion to experiment with new menu items, like vegan and vegetarian items, as business grows. But the vision extends far beyond food service – LIFE Inc aims to expand its programming to offer additional life skills classes throughout RI with their current community partners at Pine Street and local schools.
This café represents everything that makes community initiatives special: good food, meaningful work, and the power of people coming together to create positive change. It’s a place where every sandwich served and every coffee poured contributes to building a more inclusive and supportive community. So the next time you’re in Pawtucket and craving a breakfast sandwich or a perfectly brewed cup of joe, remember: at LIFE Café, you’re not just having a tasty treat – you’re supporting a mission that’s changing lives. As program participant Damien shared, “I love putting smiles on people’s faces.” Who wouldn’t love that? •
