Look Beneath the Surface to Find Summer Spoken Word Workshops

gotpoetryliveEvery summer, the Rhode Island Office of Library and Information Services offers summer reading workshops and performances under a specific theme for children, teens and adults in libraries across the state. This year, the office saw it fit to have poetry/spoken word workshops and performances in its teen category under the theme “Beneath the Surface” in eight of the state’s libraries. I am happy to announce that I was chosen by the state office to be the workshop leader/performer. The workshops will include creating simple free verse poems from structured poems, writing dramatic prose, and creating metaphor from personal experience, all in the program’s chosen theme. For more information on the Rhode Island Summer Reading Program, please visit the website at olis.ri.gov.

Don’t forget the other poetic happenings in the state! LoveHoldLetGo’s show at the roof of the Ladd Observatory shouldn’t be missed. There will be poets along with a spoken word shadow puppet play on July 2 at 9 p.m. Also check out the Providence Poetry Slam at AS220 every first and third Thursdays, Word Wednesdays every Wednesday at the Roots Café on 276 Westminster Street, and Got Poetry Live every Tuesday at Blue State Café on Thayer Street. Hope to see you around. Say, “Word!”
