Eighteen months after the doors on local theatres closed to live audiences due to the COVID-19 pandemic, curtains are rising throughout the region. Check out the theatre’s policy regarding mask and vax.
In the upcoming weeks, theatre-goers can enjoy a wide variety of productions from classic Shakespeare to Broadway tours kicking off in the capital city to feel-good storylines chosen to welcome them back.
Consider the following offerings:
September 30-October 31, Macbeth, Burbage Theatre, 59 Blackstone Ave., Pawtucket. The company is offering free live performances of the Bard’s spooky tragedy of an ill-fated Scottish king on October 1, 2 and 3, then putting the live adaptation on YouTube for free viewing through October 31. www.burbagetheatre.org/macbeth.
September 30-October 24, A Lie Agreed Upon, Gamm Theatre, 1245 Jefferson Blvd., Warwick. An adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s “An Enemy of the People,” the piece holds a mirror up to society’s struggles during the pandemic, posing probing questions about the truth, the rights of minorities and conscience. October 1-10, Murder at the Howard Johnson’s, Arctic Playhouse Theatre, 1249 Main St., West Warwick. A love triangle plays out at the local HoJo’s, with funny twists and liaisons throughout. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. www.thearcticplayhouse.com.
October 8-17, The Murder Room, The Players at Barker Playhouse, 400 Benefit St., Providence. Spoofing Britain’s serious mysteries of the 1950s, this focuses on a murder that may or may not have happened. Tickets are $25, $15 for students. www.playersri.org.
October 9-16, Pretty Woman, Providence Performing Arts Center, 220 Weybossett St., Providence. The smash movie pairing a kind-hearted millionaire and a spunky prostitute kicks off its Broadway tour promising glam and fun at the hands of Tony Award-winning director/choreographer Jerry Mitchell. October 15-November 13, The Tempest, Contemporary Theater Company, 327 Main St., Wakefield. Playing on the outdoor performance patio, the Shakespeare comedy follows travelers who find love and magic when shipwrecked. Tickets range from $10 to $30. www.contemporarytheatercompany.com.
October 21-November 13, Lifted, The Wilbury Theatre Group, presenting outdoors at The Waterfire Arts Center, 475 Valley St., Providence. The original piece by Charlie Thurston is a modern meditation on the Greek myth of Icarus, who flew too close to the sun on wings made of wax, set in a dystopian near-future.
