From August 18-21, Providence would like, if it may, to “take you on a strange journey,” when the city once again plays host to the National Rocky Horror Picture Show (RHPS) Convention. This will be the second time that the event is hosted by Rhode Island’s RKO Army shadowcast, and only the third time that the Con has taken place in the Northeast. And this time, things will be even more fun than in 2013.
Of course, one of the weekend’s major highlights will be a performance of the RHPS, which will be entirely put on by non-RKO Army members. Other shadowcast flicks are Repo! The Genetic Opera, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Once More With Feeling and Shock Treatment.
Between those performances, if people want a place to gather or celebrate, they can mingle at a number of other events. RKO Con will feature “Rocky’s Got Talent,” two dance parties, karaoke and a bunch more opportunities for guests to enjoy themselves and connect with each other.
On the Saturday of Con, the RKO Army will screen the final cut of Rocky Saved My Life, a documentary. A Q&A with director Shawn Stutler will follow. Also, there will be a panel discussion on the Rocky remake, which is premiering on Fox in October.
One of the coolest things about RKO Con is the number of great spots that it will take over during the weekend — Fete, The Columbus Theater and Aurora to name a few.
RKO Army Director Roy Rossi describes Con-goers (who range from veteran shadowcast and crew to RHPS audience members) as “people who feel as though they’re part of the family.”
