Film Review: Pride And Prejudice And Zombies

ppzBased on the book of the same name, Pride And Prejudice And Zombies is pretty much exactly what it states it is: a rewrite of Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride And Prejudice but … with zombies. In the film, Elizabeth Bennet lives with her parents and sisters and when not learning self defense or fighting off the undead, her mother is pushing her to marry one of her two suitors. Although more important than her disinterest in one suitor and her incompatibility with the other is the fact that Elizabeth’s sister, Jane, falls ill and is later kidnapped as part of a sinister plan to overthrow what is left of British society with an army of the undead.

At first glance I dismissed Pride And Prejudice And Zombies as a movie that wasn’t for me and looked kind of silly, but not in a good way. But I must admit that I was very pleasantly surprised with this movie and had a lot of fun watching it. Burr Steers delivered a hell of an entertaining and stylish film with memorable characters, exciting action sequences, some interesting twists on the zombie genre and a surprising amount of gore for a PG-13 movie. A great stylistic touch was the opening credit sequence done in the style of a cardboard diorama animation that explains both the revisionist history that led to London being walled off and the back-story of the zombie hordes.

So go check out Pride And Prejudice And Zombies if you want some zombie action with a humorous streak, and have yourself some fun!
