Album Of The Week: Heaters’ Holy Water Pool

holyMichigan is known musically for bringing the fuzz, being incredibly innovative and always unleashing badass rock ‘n’ roll. You have an extensive history of bands like The Stooges, The MC5, The White Stripes & The Suicide Machines giving substance to Michigan’s reputation of being a bastion for highly amplified tunes. A band on the rise from Grand Rapids that can put you in a psychedelic trance, Heaters has a new album coming out on September 25Holy Water Pool, that’s going to enlighten your soul. With boatloads of feedback and distortion, this trio shows off their talents in impeccable fashion with their new release.

Excitingly explosive and velvety smooth, there’s an interesting combination of the intense and the mellow in Holy Water Pool. Heaters have guitars that sound like snarling beasts ready to attack while also bringing a certain twang to the table. A very 13th Floor Elevators-esque vibe is all over it, another one of those albums that possess the ability to be both timeless and modern at the same time. One thing that really grabs me about Holy Water Pool is that each track is rhythmic enough to keep things interesting; to be that consistent is a rarity even for the most talented of bands.

Holy Water Pool is a fitting name for the album because everything from it comes at you like a wave. Not the kind that’s filled with nasty salt water that gets in your mouth and eyes, I’m talking about the kind that you want to embrace and get surrounded by. Dive into the top tracks off of my Album Of The Week and enjoy.

Kicking off the album with fuzzy authority, “Kamikaze” is a laid-back rocker that grows and grows as the guitar strums with the drumbeats. A track that has a cool surf vibe to it, “Propane” is a danceable number that has a killer chorus to make you act like a fool on whatever floor you’re grooving on. Another one with some righteous tones, “Dune Ripper,” lives up to the name with scorching riffs that’ll give you the chills.

Heaters have a couple of shows in New York City happening with the release show for Holy Water Pool happening in Alphaville on the 25th followed up with a show a few weeks later at the Elvis Guesthouse on October 13. Let’s hope these cool cats head up into New England soon and grace us with their presence. Until then, grab a copy of Holy Water Pool when it comes out on the 25th. Give your musical taste some psychedelic sanctification.
