Opened
Yellow Door Taqueria: Not quite open yet, but on the docket, this popular Bostonian restaurant is moving to RI. Mexican food under the reign of Dropkick Murphy’s frontman Ken Casey (aren’t they Irish?) and other celebrities, the Yellow Door Taqueria already has three popular spots all over Bean Town. Opening soon, with a trademark West Coast vibe. Follow their every move on insta @yellowdoortaco.
Ocean House’s Open Air Secret Garden: If you thought the Ocean House couldn’t get more fancy, there is now a secret garden sushi bar! Seriously. Enjoy a California roll on their deck, alongside a cold beer, and credit card debt. Probably worth it though! Check it out at 1 Bluff Avenue, Watch Hill, or read more on their website oceanhouseri.com.
Little Clam: Nestled inside the Wayfinder Newport hotel (please don’t make me say like a pearl) is the Little Clam. The Clam aims to celebrate local fisheries and RI’s aquacultural community, and who doesn’t love fresh oysters, seafood towers, and an array of tasty bites? Shuck your way over to wayfindernewport.com to learn more, or visit 151 Kalbfus Road, Newport.
Uptown Theater: This historic theater, formally known as the Columbus Theater, just opened back up with its first performance by comedian Kevin Nealon! Keep an eye on this place as they re-introduce live entertainment. Visit their website for upcoming events at uptownpvd.com or waltz over to 270 Broadway St to see the marquee.
Closed
The Modern Diner: Unlike its unlucky sibling, the Wayland Square Diner, this diner is not closing its doors for good, but is up for sale. The Modern Diner has been serving food since the 1980s and was one of the first diners to be on the National Register of Historic Places. Also, it was named by the Food Network as one of the top five diners in America, all over its infamous Custard French Toast. I could go for a piece of that right about now. Owned by the Demou family, their decision to sell it isn’t without remorse. As the transition goes, the greasy eggs, bacon, and French toast will stay the same, hopefully, under the new owners. Get a taste at 364 East Ave, Pawtucket.
Smug Brewery: This is a personal sore spot of mine, but Smug Brewery is closing its doors. Located in the basement of the Motif headquarters, Smug was a great after-work spot to catch a brew, decompress, and complain about the state of humanity. They also had great beer! Last day is August 30, so hustle over there right away to toast one last pint.
Trinity Brewhouse: Hopefully a temporary situation, this 25+ year mug club is undergoing renovations and expects to reopen in September under new management. It is unclear whether the previous staff will return, what sort of cuisine will be offered, and whether it will still be a brew pub. The new ownership was not available for comment, but they are the same restaurateurs behind The Patio on Broadway in PVD. As a member of the mug club from the very first day, I want to wish all the best to retiring founder Josh Miller, who indirectly brought joy to so many Rhode Islanders through this feisty location. – MR
