Patios to live for
A guide to spring patio culture in PVD

Spring has sprung for the ocean state. The plants are coming back to life, and the grey winter drifts into memory. The sun is shining and your outfit is slaying. You know what that means; it’s patio time. Here are some of the area’s favorite places to soak up the sun and spritzers this spring in Providence.

DePasquale Square is always a fan-favorite choice for spring. A classic like Constantino’s charms with familiar Italian dishes, spritzes and a great wine list. They have the most outdoor seating in the city, so a wait is uncommon, and they can accommodate very large groups. Newer to the square is Canta Negra, slinging authentic Mexican street tacos with a full outdoor bar, hookah, and specials before 10pm three days a week. Think 5-dollar Patron or Don Julio shots, or low-price hookahs. Come with friends or grab a seat at the bar and enjoy the sights.

On the East Side we have the lovely Mare rooftop, open 10am – 10pm daily. They serve up elevated Mediterranean dishes with a focus on seafood. After all, their moniker means ocean in French. They serve lunch, dinner and brunch on the weekends. The experience is refined to produce the ultimate patio experience – no city smells reach those heights and there is a sense of privacy.

The East End has a rear patio and an excellent whiskey selection. The food is refined bar fare with charcuterie and small plates that are certain to impress. Nearby at India Point is Narragansett Brewery. They have a large patio with views of the Bay, great beer, and snacks. Best of all, it’s petfriendly. Rooftop at the Providence G Hotel serves as a late-night destination with live music and performers on the weekend. Outdoor fire pits and well-maintained greenery encapsulate you in a rooftop garden. Reservations are suggested as it tends to be a full house, but bar seating is available.

The Bayberry Garden has great views of the new pedestrian bridge, and excellent selection, while the Trinity Beer Garden in the Kennedy Plaza area is surrounded by city sights and great people watching- if that’s your thing. The West End charms with micro patios, so availability is limited at most locations, but the city charms and sights are quaint and quiet. Check out local favorites like Julian’s, open for brunch and dinner after siesta, Y Noodle & Bar for soup dumplings, bao and a cute cocktail, or amazing small plates at The Slow Rhode. Grab a beer at Moniker Brewery or a Tiki Cocktail at Ogies, both have some of the largest patios in the neighborhood, so don’t fret if you can’t get a reservation elsewhere. •
