Roller Derby Roundup: The Bees Buzz and the Honeys Shine!

The travel season might be over, but the Providence’s B-Team, The Killah Bees, got a chance to compete in the All-8-On-The-Floor tournament in Auburn, Mass, on the weekend of August 11. It’s been five years since they last competed and won, and the Bees fought hard with victories over Maine and Troy. In the finals, they faced last year’s winners, Roc City B-Sides, a team that went undefeated 11-0 in 2018.

The B-Sides held the Bees at bay for three quarters of the bout. In a string of impressive multi-passing jams, the Bees took control up until jam #19 where the B-Sides regained the lead 176-168. With only one second left on the clock, Bees’ coach Alexi Lawless called a timeout that would allow one final jam. As the whistle blew, Bees’ defense locked in on B-Sides’ jammer #3226 Fifth Hellement, allowing #88 Jamie Lee HurtUs to capture lead jam. After two full passes, the Bees clenched the 176-178 victory and the 2018 A8OTF trophy.

Game three of Providence Roller Derby’s 2018 home season took place on Saturday, August 18, and pit The Old Money Honeys against The Sakonnet River Rats. Both teams came into the bout 1-0. Honeys skated out hot in the first half with 18 of 26 lead jams and stayed ahead in points. Rats would strike hard as #3 Ruca A. Salt picked up a 16-point jam. Honeys remained head in the second half, using strong blocking from #83 Delta Bravo and #206 Cindy Lou Screw and closing out with a victory 158-118.
