Sustainable Summer
Beating the heat while also being kind to the environment

Staying cool and vibrant this summer starts in your closet! During a heat wave wear light colors, white, gold, or powder blue, bright neons or rainbow hues. Not only do lighter colors make a difference when the temperature reaches the hot zone, but having breathable material to prevent anti-chafing is a plus too. Read that label on your clothing (if it’s still there!) to look for lightweight organic fabric such as cotton, linen, silk, flax, or bamboo. Think loose fitting with natural fibers to beat the heat, but still keep that summer look. Avoid polyester, nylon, or spandex.

When temperatures rise in the Providence area, humidity makes it feel even hotter.   That’s why it is especially important to keep your body temperature cooler. It’s hard to resist the impulse to throw all your hot, heavy clothes away and scrounge for new, cooler gear. Although, with our current environmental crisis, it’s important to be mindful about what your clothes are made of to help put less energy into the pollutants from manufacturing and waste.

In collaborating with a local business in Coventry, RI, I asked Jodi-Lynn, owner of Mystics Touch a few questions on what clothing she likes to sell in her metaphysical supplies and gift shop.

Kelly Marino: What clothing lines do you provide at your shop?

JL: I love to carry lines that have intricate details to them. One of my favorite lines that we usually carry is called Gypsy Rose. This line is actually made by humans and not by robots. It is a big, Bohemian, hippie inspired style and supporting this artesian line helps support communities around the world. They emphasize peace, love, and of course, the hippie vibe.

KM: Is there a reason you prefer these styles?

JL: The Bohemian style to me just screams peace and love. We are all individuals, so it is nice to be able to carry clothing that allows you to emphasize that. I also like to remind people that they are magical, each and every one of us. So your clothing should make you feel like it.

KM: What accessories do you look for in the summer to match your summer clothes?

JL: Beautiful accessories would be shells;anklets or earrings, anything sea glass, elephant charms seem to be a big hit in the summer as well as scarfs and of course those great big beach bags that we all love.

KM: Which fabrics are the best comfort in summer heat and humidity, in your opinion?

JL: Of course, loosefitting cotton is always the number one choice, but free flowing rayon is awesome in the summer as well. Try to get an article of clothing that’s a combination of both.

KM: Are there any particular styles that are popular or practical in summer?

JL:  Many people purchase our dresses and coverups during the summer months.

KM:: Do people wear lighter or darker colors more often in summer?

JL: In the summer, you’ll see many wearing beautiful hues of blue, ivory, teal, purple and pink. I love the summertime fun prints on our umbrella dresses… Summer is a fun time of the year;I like that some of our clothing emphasizes that.

KM: Do you offer outfits for the beach, summer evenings, or staycation essentials?

JL: Right now our store has a nice selection of full length skirts for the summer, pullovers, coverups, lace up, blouses, and umbrella dresses. We carry one size fits most, but we do carry large and extra large as well.

KM: Do you have a loyalty program?

JL: Yes we do! Once you are in the system every purchase you make goes towards your own loyalty program if you decide to sign up. Be sure to follow us on  Instagram, @mysticstouchgiftshop,for a full collection of photos and updates daily.
