All Seasons Café: This East Providence café, serving empanadas, coffee, pastries, and ice cream, announced over social media it will be closing its doors on December 29. So you still have time to head over there and check it out before it’s gone for good! 365 Waterman Ave, East Providence. allseasoncaferi.com
Green Line Apothecary:. We are sad to report that the CVS behemoth has bought out this nostalgia-inducing pharmacy, taking over their customer list and closing their locations. They sold great drugs and also great milkshakes. Both Wakefield and Providence locations will be shutting their doors on December 20. Before they depart, visit them at 905 N Main St, PVD or 245 Main St, Wakefield. greenlineapothecary.com or their Instagram @greenlineapothocary
Saint: The morally challenging eatery and bar that made patrons choose between dining in heaven, hell, or outside in purgatory has hung up its wings The location went back to school in October, reopening as Varsity, a “luxury sports lounge” featuring exquisite drinks, “Halfy Hour specials,” over 20 wide-screen TVs and a bottomless mimosa brunch on Sunday. 289 Atwells Ave, PVD. varsityprovidence.com
Showcase: It’s cut and wrap for the Showcase Cinemas in Seekonk. Their final screening will take place on January 5 at the Commerce Way location off Rte 6. A Market Basket will be moving in.
These are sad closures, but we are excited to have, for the first time in a long time, more opens than closes in this report!
Open
Strive Kitchen + Bar: With an opening date of November 1, Strive is a “chic and modern eatery in the creative capital” with a “speakeasy environment.” I’m not so much Chic and Modern as I am Cheap and Greasy, but I will say their beet-salmon-risotto dish looks pretty damn tasty. You can find them at 383 Admiral St, PVD, on their website at skbpvd.com or Instagram @skbpvd.
12 Dumplings & Hot Pot: Dumplings dumplings dumplings! Opened November 15 to feed the dumpling fiends. We wish them luck; the dumpling competition in PVD is fierce (but if anyone can wrap it up…) They’re located at 83-85 (?) Benevolent St, PVD, on the web at 12dumplings.com, and Instagram @12_dumplings_providence.
Loma: The opening of this small Latin-influenced bar on December 6 was greeted with excitement. There will be jazz and a max capacity of 25 people, so it’s perfect for those nights you’d rather spend with an intimate crowd. They’re on 112 Spruce St, Federal Hill, PVD and on Instagram @loma_bar.
Book Around: In an era where Amazon seems to eat everything, it’s a joy to see a new bookstore open. With an emphasis on local authors and a service set that includes coaching indie authors, marketers and sellers, this new bastion of literature in Pawtucket is tucked away up on the second floor of Hope Artiste Village, the pseudo-mall arts community at 1005 Main St. So you may have to look around to find Book Around.
Colonels Collectibles: Vintage everything, from records and comics to art and clothing. 23 Esten Ave, Pawtucket. @colonelscollectibles
Dune Brothers: The famous outdoor haven for fresh seafood has announced that it is close to realizing a long-time aspiration – to have a sit-down, indoors restaurant serving its catches. Keep an eye on Dune Brothers Seafood social media for dates and the address of the new Fox Point location (alas, the North Main St attempt didn’t work out)
Correction
We recently published an announcement of the new complex, The Bend, in Olneyville. That includes the Knight Library, a bar under general manager Dani Riley at 11 Olneyville Square. We incorrectly called it the Knight Bar, and left out Dani’s title. Motif regrets the error. (It is also not to be confused with the Knight Library in Elmwood, where one can also check out books but cannot order drinks). •
