I often find upcoming artists trying to sound like their favorite artist. Not too many are creative enough to think outside the box and discover what their sound is. But once in a while I find an artist who doesn’t sound like anything I’ve heard before. That happened a few months ago when I attended a […]
On New Year’s Eve, Tight Crew will be throwing a “Retro Rewind” Party, taking up three floors at the Hope Artiste Village. For those who like to rave all night and bask in the glow of the black light, their events are the local gold standard. Providence punches above its weight when it comes to […]
Okee dokee folks… I am wondering if I should make a New Year’s resolution this year. I never do. I do, however, NEED to get organized. I live in a state of perpetual chaos. Maybe that is good, especially now, because I think things are going to get very chaotic in a few weeks. I […]
The last column of the year for music journalists is typically reserved for “Best of” lists, or so says my inbox, which is flooded with suggestions from various publicists. Anyways, here is a bunch of “Best of” from the 2016, including national records, local records and best bets to ring in the New Year. I’d […]

Okee dokee folks … I had the opportunity to experience the musical Once on its first night of a four-show run at the Providence Performing Arts Center. I needed to let it percolate in my brain for a few days and contemplate what I really thought about the show before I wrote this. Initially I […]
On Sunday, December 4, at Firehouse 13, beer will be swilled and a whole lot of rock ‘n’ roll will grace the room. The Supersuckers are coming through as part of a stacked show with Jesse Dayton, Gallows Bound, The Living Deads and locals The Quahogs for what has the makings to be one crazy night […]
I’ve often said that jazz is social music; however, I haven’t explained how it plays into the current musical landscape. The country appears to be in a state of flux, so perhaps now it is imperative to consider the history of jazz and the way it reflects the culture and the forces that shape it. When I […]
Murphy’s Law It is always one shit-show of a party when Jimmy G from NYC and the boys from Murphy’s Law roll into town. Murphy’s Law are bona fide hardcore legends that date back to the 1980s, and they have never slowed down or lost their bite. Expect beer to be flying and shirtless old dudes […]
