Elizabeth’s Portofino Tuscan Grill is a delicious gem located in a tiny Warwick strip mall. Upon entering, the welcoming atmosphere is immediately felt — Elizabeth’s is full of friendly faces and elegant lighting, which sets the mood in its three intimate and cozy dining areas, each complete with its own ambiance. When the weather’s right, diners may also enjoy a scenic back patio with a view of Cranberry Pond. The bar isn’t big but it manages to offer a large selection and daily specials.
“We really enjoy Elizabeth’s,” says patron Jean Lehman. “The food is delicious and the service is great.”
Owner Elizabeth Krause bought the restaurant in 2017 with the intention of restoring its popularity and making it the talk in RI culinary circles. Krause gave the building a facelift to make it more inviting to customers, and makes a point of greeting everyone to make them feel comfortable and welcome. The waiting area is as friendly as the bar, most patrons converse and laugh while they wait for their table.
“She is extremely welcoming, and the restaurant is comfortable while providing consistently excellent food,” says customer Lisa Valatka.
The menu was developed by head chef Joe Zacavic. The entrée options feature a good mix of land and sea. There are steak, pork, and veal options, a variety of chicken dishes, and an array of seafood selections to choose from. No matter what you choose, the portions are large enough to ask for a box. There is a standard menu along with daily specials that provide an extra option. Bread is served with a plate of olive oil and garlic roasting under a small flame.
“I especially appreciate the ability to make most of the menu gluten-safe,” Valatka says, adding that the staff at Elizabeth’s know her so well they remember to put a gluten-free roll in the oven once she’s seated.
“The Tuscan beans and greens are a crowd-pleaser,” says Lehman. “I also love the bay scallops.”
Elizabeth of Portofino’s has become a beacon to the community as well as a popular dining destination. Krause uses her business as an avenue to benefit those in need. She created the “24 Days of Martinis to Christmas” and has run the program annually. The program provides a special martini option each day and all proceeds go to charity. In 2023, she chose Elves for the Elderly and Boys and Girls Clubs of Warwick, and used the money raised to purchase gifts for young and old alike.
“I was already a big fan of Elizabeth and her restaurant when I learned of all her philanthropy and involvement in the community,” Valatka says.
Every meal at Elizabeth’s meal concludes with a complimentary shot of limoncello, which leaves customers clinking their glasses and smiling. It also serves as a boozy palate cleanser and a positive end to the night. A night at Elizabeth of Portofino’s leaves plenty of reasons to toast.
