Kevin’s Culture Picks: What kept our culture expert entertained in March?

Every week, I’ve been doing a deep dive into cultural issues, usually theater-related, that are bothering me or that deserve a second look. But who needs another thinkpiece, right?

I host two weekly programs on my theater company’s Faceboook page (Facebook.com/EpicTheatreCo) where I ask guests what has been keeping them creatively engaged or excited, and I thought I could put together some of the movies, television shows, books and music we discuss.

I’ll do this at the beginning of every month (until we’re out of … this), and hopefully it’ll keep you busy as we start to see a light at the end of the tunnel.

So, here’s what I enjoyed in the month of March:

Movies

Judas and the Black Messiah

Moxie (Streaming on Netflix)

Raya and the Last Dragon (Streaming on Disney+)

Zack Snyder’s The Justice League (Streaming on HBO Max)

Television

Allen vs. Farrow (Streaming on HBO Max)

Books

Committed, by Viet Thanh Nguyen

Last Call, by Elon Green

Klara and the Sun, by Kazuo Ishiguro

Music

Driver, Adult Mom

Obviously, Lake Street Dive

Flock, Jane Weaver

Smiling With No Teeth, Genesis Owusu

WE ARE, Jon Batiste

Still Woman Enough, Loretta Lynn

Daddy’s Country Gold, Melissa Carper

Best Streaming Theater of the Month

The Last Five Years — Little Theatre of Fall River’s production of Jason Robert Brown’s modern classic is the perfect fit for the beginning of spring as we look forward hopefully and look back trepidatiously. The direction and design are detailed and subtle, the performances by Jason Cabral and Adina Lundquist are first-rate, and the sound is so good you’ll feel like you’re right there in the front row.
