Munchie Mania
Where to get dank takeout this 420

In college, I worked at a local pizza shop in South Kingstown. Every so often, we’d get the stoned URI student or local. I remember one guy came in, studied our menu for a solid ten minutes with his bloodshot eyes, started giggling and ordered a single side of ranch. Other times, kids would come in, the pungent odor of a freshly fishbowl car still clinging to their hoodies as they slowly selected which slices they wanted. Patience was key with these customers and they always left us staff cracking up when they’d left. And sometimes, we’d be on the other side, slowly entering whatever the customer ordered into the suddenly very bright and complicated POS system. I mean, it was a pizza place, the occasional parking lot bowl hit was basically part of the job.

Personally, my weed habits are mellow, if any. Sometimes, I’ll plan an elaborate meal, decide on a movie (nothing’s worse than trying to make a decision when high) and then eat a 5mg chocolate square for a nice buzz. Nothing crazy but enough to where the food tastes a little better and whatever movie I’m watching is just a little funnier.

Sometimes though, cooking can feel like such a chore. And with so many great food spots in the Creative Capital, why not support local and grab some takeout this 420? Here’s a list of great spots to order from when the munchies hit:

PVDonuts

Since 2016, this donut shop has been churning out creative donut flavors. An East End standby, the menu rotates so there’s always something new to try. They’ve got cereal flavor donuts like Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Cocoa Pebbles. They even make a Cereal Milk donut! Any stoner knows how good cereal hits after a j, so support local and get a cereal-inspired donut at PVDonuts instead this 420. PVDonuts offers vegan and flourless options as well. And another huge plus: they have online ordering, so you can choose before the weed-induced indecisiveness sets in and avoid any anxiety-inducing face-to-face interactions on 420.

Knead

With a couple locations across the state, this donut shop handcrafts their award-winning donuts daily. Their assortment of flavors will have every stoner eating two or three. Choose from a variety of styles, cake, old fashioned, filled or brioche. Keep it classic with a dense, old-fashioned style carrot cake donut. Or indulge in a cake-style Churro Donut, or the filled PB&J donut, only available on weekends and luckily for you, 420 is on a Sunday this year. You’re stoned, you can try them all! Knead also has options for our gluten-free and vegan friends, and pre-ordering is also available.

Pizza Marvin

Crafted by two-time James Beard nominated chef, Robert Andreozzi, Pizza Marvin is so good, you can’t have just one slice. Enjoy thick grandma-style slices or opt for a full New Haven-style pie at this Fox Point pizza joint. If you’re looking for something substantial, try the Carbonara pizza, with pancetta and brussel sprouts, or go for the North Provolone pizza, with provolone cheese, sausage and pepperoncini. Slices are only for sale in house but the full menu of pizzas and appetizers, like their taco wings and meatballs, can be pre-ordered online.

Pizza J

West Side pizza powerhouse Pizza J serves up mouthwatering pies and apps – perfect takeout options for when the munchies hit. Start off with some wings and garlic knots and then dig into a pizza, like the Mr Potato Head, with potatoes, bacon, scallions and plenty of cheese. Or enjoy a Hulk Out Pizza, Pizza J’s version of a buffalo chicken pie. Vegan and gluten free options available.

Tallulah’s Taqueria

Burritos, quesadillas, tacos, nachos and rice bowls, Tallulah’s has it all for your 420 cravings. There’s a lot of options, but whether you choose a barbacoa burrito, the breakfast nachos or just a cheese quesadilla, it’ll all hit the spot. Don’t forget to order some churros to finish out the meal. Tallulah’s also has vegetarian and vegan options. Online ordering is available.

Tacos Don Nacho

In Pawtucket, this small take out spot delivers on delicious and budget friendly Mexican bites. Grab a burrito, some tacos or a torta for your 420 munchies. Don’t forget some of their iconic salsa verde and an horchata for the dry mouth. Vegetarian options are available. For this spot, no ordering online is available so take that into consideration as you plan your legal 420 shenanigans.

Enjoy the food, the weed and the vibes this 420. I feel obligated to tell you, dear readers, to stay safe, even though the days of sketchy weed are mostly behind us.
