John Newton Templeton is unexpectedly freed after his master’s death, he migrates to the free state of Ohio where he meets the Presbyterian minister and Ohio University president, Robert Wilson, an avowed abolitionist .Wilson seizes the opportunity to use the promising young ex-slave to fulfill his belief that Templeton has a divine calling to lead the free blacks in a sovereign nation of their own – a new colony called Liberia.
