Slinging Drinks

Cocktails, Competition, and Community: these three Cs are the motivation behind SLING Cocktail Exposition and Competition happening on June 26 at Skyline at Waterplace, with proceeds going to benefit the RI Community Food Bank. Co-organizers Matt Simmons and Lupe Aguilar are gathering some of PVD’s most talented bartenders into one room, asking them to craft two cocktails based on a set of limiting criteria, and inviting you all to reap the rewards.

Simmons said he hopes this event will highlight the local bartenders and establishments in the city that are doing amazing things and are otherwise overlooked in the summer. In an unorthodox fashion, all of the contestants were handpicked based on their knowledge and execution of craft cocktails and asked to submit recipes for the competition. The criteria? They must use tequila or vodka, an organic shrub, a Yacht Club soda and a maximum of only five ingredients.

There will be seven to 10 contestants, each making two cocktails. While judges have the “very difficult job” of declaring a winner, attendees can sample as many or as few as they’d like — and if tequila and vodka aren’t your spirits of choice, there will be a cash bar with other drinks available, as well as some small bites. The event’s biggest draw, however, is its charitable heart: to benefit our local food bank, a cause that both Simmons and Aguilar are passionate about. I’ll drink to that!
