Born in Peru, Jorge F. Cárdenas built a life defined by service, education, and opportunity. After a successful career in industrial and labor relations in Peru, he immigrated to the United States in 1993 and made Rhode Island his home, where he devoted decades to strengthening the relationship between schools, families, and the community.
As Community Relations Manager for Sodexo School Services, Jorge forged partnerships with education, parents, community organizations, and civic leaders. He also served as a field coordinator for Parents Making a Difference and led AmeriCorps programs focused on youth development, family engagement, and after-school opportunities in PVD public schools.
In 1999, Jorge co-founded the Back-to-School Celebration in RI, an initiative that has provided more than 16,000 backpacks filled with school supplies for students across RI. What began at a single site serving about 400 children has grown to events in PVD, Pawtucket, Central Falls and Woonsocket, a powerful example of what can be accomplished when businesses, non-profits, and community members work together.
Jorge also served on numerous boards and advisory groups, including the YMCA in Providence, the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Hispanic Affairs, AARP, Amos House, RI After School Plus Alliance, PASA, Mt. Hope Learning Center, First Works, the Injury Prevention Center at Rhode Island Hospital, the Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence and Latino Dollars for Scholars.
His commitment earned him many recognitions, including the Cesar Chavez Community Award, the RILPAC Bill Richardson Award, the Sodexo Champion of Diversity Award and the Hispanic Art and Culture of RI Excellence Award.
Jorge believed in people, especially children, and in the power of education to create opportunities. His leadership, compassion and unwavering dedication left a lasting impact on Rhode Island’s families and future generations.
