Although domestic servants made everyday life in grand homes possible, their identities and roles within the household have long been hidden. Jennifer Pustz, Historic New England museum historian, will reveal details about these servants’ lives during her lecture on Monday, September 21, in one of those grand homes, Providence’s own Lippitt House. Doors open 6:30 pm, lecture begins 7:00 pm.

Ms. Pustz illustrates the diversity of domestic service in New England over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by focusing on Castle Tucker, Roseland Cottage, and Codman Estate, three Historic New England properties. Period domestic manuals, ephemera, and other historic materials bring the lives of servants and their relationships with their employers to light. Light refreshments to follow.

Before the lecture, attendees may wish to plan for time to view Stories Untold, a public art installation on the Lippitt House grounds by artist Aaron Pexa, featuring vibrant figural silhouettes that represent the Lippitt family’s domestic servants. The outdoor installation (on view through November 1) helps the museum stand out in the neighborhood, playfully interacting with the surrounding architecture of Providence’s East Side.

Admission: $5 for Historic New England and Preserve Rhode Island members, $10 nonmembers. Registration is required. Please call 617-994-6678 for more information or register online at www.historicnewengland.org The Museum is located at 199 Hope Street, Providence, RI.
