Locale Profiles: Viva Mexico

marble sinkProvidence has no shortage of Mexican restaurants. In this economy, they are gaining popularity for providing affordable cuisine in a festive restaurant setting. Viva Mexico ups the ante by making affordable also taste delicious, and providing delicious margaritas to boot.

Viva Mexico was born from a food truck that became Mexico Garibaldi on Federal Hill. Known for cow’s feet tostadas as well as beef burritos, it remains a staple of Mexican cuisine in the state. Viva Mexico steps it up a notch in this bright, urban, modern restaurant with splashy color on Washington Street with proximity to Providence landmarks like Lupo’s and URI Feinstein campus.

I was in the mood for chicken tacos, and while the other selections looked a little more complex and unique, the dish was prepared quickly and I was not disappointed. It was presented on a simple, attractive plate, and I got three chicken tacos affordably. They looked tasty enough; however, I was in for a great surprise. The chicken was so succulent that it practically melted in my mouth. Prepared simply and without much pomp, I thoroughly enjoyed its roasted flavor. Garnished with lime, this chicken taco was easily one of the best I’d tasted yet in the city. It is hard to get excited about a common dish, but Viva Mexico raised the bar.

Speaking of bars … the margaritas are affordably priced and made to order. I found the atmosphere casual and unrushed, and waitstaff doting and friendly. They were attentive and communicative, and made the experience enjoyable.
