At Providence, a Heat Advisory is effective Thu, Aug 6, 11am, to Fri, Aug 7, 8pm. Afternoon temperatures/heat indices are likely Thu 88°F/100°F and Fri 89°F/100°F, which can be dangerously life-threatening. Chance of rain, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms, will reach 15% each afternoon, increasing to 25% Fri evening. Peak heat will be a few hours before and after 3pm. All of RI and nearby southern New England are under advisory. In the following days, temperatures will decrease by about 10°F, below advisory criteria.
Heat related illnesses increase significantly during high heat and high humidity events.
The body loses the ability to regulate its temperature by evaporating sweat, possibly causing severe illness such as heat stroke, which is life-threatening, as heat index this high can cause death. If outside, curtail strenuous activity, stay hydrated, take breaks, and seek shade when possible. Do not leave children or pets in vehicles. Check on elderly and other vulnerable people, especially if they have no air conditioning.
The heat index is a calculated estimate of the “apparent temperature” based on the combined temperature in the shade as measured by an ordinary dry bulb thermometer and the relative humidity. Conditions in direct sunlight will usually be substantially hotter.
