Heat Advisory Tue–Wed: Dangerous heat indices up to 99°F expected; Air Quality Alert

Heat Advisory in effect from July 14, 11:00 AM EDT until July 15, 08:00 PM EDT

At Providence, a Heat Advisory is effective Tue, Jul 14, 11am, to Wed, Jul 15, 8pm. Afternoon temperatures/heat indices are likely Tue 94°F/99°F and Wed 94°F/98°F, which can be dangerously life-threatening. Chance of rain will reach 30% Wed afternoon, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms. Temperatures will decrease below advisory criteria in the following days, but only slightly. Peak heat will be a few hours before and after 3pm. All of RI and nearby southern New England are under advisory.

Heat related illnesses increase significantly during high heat and high humidity events.

The body loses the ability to regulate its temperature by evaporating sweat, possibly causing severe illness such as heat stroke, which is life-threatening, as heat index this high can cause death. If outside, curtail strenuous activity, stay hydrated, take breaks, and seek shade when possible. Do not leave children or pets in vehicles. Check on elderly and other vulnerable people, especially if they have no air conditioning.

The heat index is a calculated estimate of the “apparent temperature” based on the combined temperature in the shade as measured by an ordinary dry bulb thermometer and the relative humidity. Conditions in direct sunlight will usually be substantially hotter.
