Film Review: Lo And Behold, Reveries Of A Connected World

From the UCLA classroom where the Internet first relayed to life as the Arpanet to the future possibilities of our worldwide connection, Werner Herzog’s newest film explores the multi-faceted concept that is our “connected world.” Not just the origins of the Internet are discussed, but also its multitude of uses, its dangerous side and even the lives of people who shun the technology. Through interviews with people involved in many types of Internet-related technologies and from numerous stages of the technology’s development, Lo And Behold, Reveries Of A Connected World gives us a thorough overview of everything that is “ the internet.”

What could be dry and academic subject matter becomes both poetic and humorous through the lens of Herzog, especially once you add his voiceover into the mix. His newest documentary in an ongoing string of wonderful esoteric films is certainly no disappointment and may be his most in-depth project yet. The interviews are all personable and interesting while the overall subject never gets boring; this is a fantastic overview of a subject worth documenting and discussing.

Fans of Herzog’s documentaries will not be disappointed in his newest offering, which I believe anyone with an interest in modern Internet technology will find fascinating. Lo And Behold, Reveries Of A Connected World opens Friday, August 19 at the Cable Car Cinema.
