Cannabis Massage

Most cannabis users know that it is used best when incorporated into a wellness regime, working synergistically with other healthful activities. One great combination is using topical cannabis products with massage therapy. The components in cannabis work on multiple levels to make massage more effective. Cannabidiol, or CBD, is well known for its pain relieving properties; however, it is also a powerful anti-inflammatory, and studies have shown that it helps to more quickly repair bones and connective tissue as well. THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis, does not produce euphoric effects when used topically and binds to the cannabinoid receptors in the skin, providing pain relief. Cannabis also has potent anxiolytic properties, which help the patient to better relax into the massage, allowing deeper massage of the muscle and tissue. Consuming edible products before massage can also help to reduce pain and anxiety. Aromatherapy can play a key role in cannabis massage; using products with lavender or chamomile oils for relaxation, or grapefruit or ylang ylang for a more uplifting effect.

While spas in cannabis-legal states like Colorado are beginning to adopt cannabis into their offerings, there are also options right here in Rhode Island for medical cardholders. Local massage therapist Ashley Smith is a medical marijuana patient, and can offer cannabis massage to RI patients who provide their own topical cannabis product. All three dispensaries in Rhode Island offer a variety of cannabis topicals, or patients can easily make their own massage oil with the recipe below. Ashley works with local cannabis activist organizations like Green Cross RI and the New England Veterans Alliance, and has found cannabis massage to be a beneficial service for a number of ailments including fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Lupus, Lyme disease, Crohn’s, arthritis, muscle lemon-906141_640spasms, phantom limb pain, peripheral neuropathy, and inflammatory skin conditions.
