Big Trouble in Little Rhody: RI’s classic rivalry never tasted so good

Chip Samson, owner of Shaidzon Beer Co., is a huge fan of the URI Rams. Mike Delehanty, Operating Partner at Union Station Brewing, loves all things Providence, including the PC Friars. The two college basketball fans decided that they’d make a collaboration brew in whichever town hosted the matchup, and this year, on 12/4, the two teams will go head to head in the Creative Capital.

What started as a friendly sports rivalry concept got passed to the head brewers of the two organizations, Josh Letourneau of Shaizon and Dave Kenney of Union Station Brewery. Through partnership, they’ve produced a golden Kölsch style ale, just for the occasion of the big game. To celebrate, they are having two release parties: one in South Kingstown at Ocean Mist — URI’s neck of the woods — the day before the game, and one in PVD at Union Station in the hours before the game begins.

Who knew a historic rivalry could produce such sudsy teamwork?
