Monday, October 5: Wavves, Twin Peaks, Steep Leans; 7pm; $20 advance; 18+ only; Paradise, 967 Commonwealth Ave, Boston. If you are a regular to this column, then you might be aware already of my love for Wavves. This tour celebrates the soon-to-be-released fifth record, oddly titled V. It took a couple plays for their previous record Afraid of […]
Psychedelic music can be amazingly groovy in many ways. It can also have a laid back tone with a clash of sounds to keep things interesting. An excellent example of this is Bar Harbor, Maine, act Coke Weed and their upcoming album Mary Weaver that’s due out on October 9. It’s mellow and funky, but it’s […]
Okee dokee folks … Sometimes I have long-winded stories to tell, sometimes not. This is one of those rare times that I don’t have much to say. Maybe the blood moon eclipse sucked my brain dry like some bizarre sci-fi horror flick. But I will never be at a loss to tell you about the […]
Believe it or not, there is a distinct relationship between folk music and punk rock. Once you go past the differences in amplification, the styles share a lot of similarities. Some of the best folk and punk songs have socially and politically significant lyrics about genuine life experiences. Most punk and folk songs have the infamous […]
It’s that time again. With two shows a year, Boston Calling has quickly become one of the East Coast’s best music festivals. A mix of established superstars, talented up-and-comers and a couple locals sprinkled in makes for an incredible experience. As New England slowly but surely creeps into fall, the 6th edition of the festival […]
It’s hard to believe, but The Turbo A.C.’s have been kicking up a punk rock ruckus for 20 years. They bring it with fist-pumping adrenalized anthems. I’ve always liked The Turbo A.C.’s because their tunes mix the fury of punk rock with infectious surf hooks. In the post-apocalypse world, The Turbo A.C.’s will probably be considered […]
Michigan is known musically for bringing the fuzz, being incredibly innovative and always unleashing badass rock ‘n’ roll. You have an extensive history of bands like The Stooges, The MC5, The White Stripes & The Suicide Machines giving substance to Michigan’s reputation of being a bastion for highly amplified tunes. A band on the rise from Grand Rapids […]
Full disclosure time: I am not a country music aficionado by anyone’s definition. Don’t get me wrong, my record collection contains more than a few selections from the likes of Johnny Cash, Gram Parsons and various rockabilly acts. But hardcore Western hillbilly is a gaping hole in my musical education. That said, it doesn’t take […]
That’s life… as the song goes, so let’s start with the life of my friend David Hemingway. Dave is a musician who has fought for his life so courageously for the past few years against cancer. Unfortunately, sometimes courage is not enough when it comes to cancer. Dave passed away on the morning of September 13 […]
Okee dokee folks … Back in the ORIGINAL days of recordings on vinyl, I used to read the liner notes of my albums over and over again. There was no MTV (not that there really is now) and no internet. The only information you learned about the bands and songs was from the record’s packaging. […]
