Pug-let, Shakespeare’s Hamlet performed by pug dogs, is sweeping the theater world like a furry tornado – with established actor, playwright and Epic Theatre Artistic Director Kevin Broccoli in the role of Toto. Started as a satirical joke on Kickstarter (“To Pee or Not to Pee: An All-Pug Hamlet Media Frenzy,” Sep 4, 2014), the […]
Take a little of “Orange is the New Black,” sprinkle in a bit of “Desperate Housewives,” and you get Epic Theatre Company’s new production, These Ruthless Bitches. The show is loosely based on Claire Booth Luce’s The Women, a comedy of manners in New York high society. These Ruthless Bitches transplants the milieu to a […]
I love Mel Brooks. I can still watch Blazing Saddles and crack up with each viewing! So going into Theatre by the Sea’s production of Young Frankenstein, I had high hopes. I was not disappointed. You are seated and immediately your eyes are drawn to the beautifully painted scrim on stage. It’s painted in black […]
Professional 2nd Story Theatre This theater season is an exciting one at 2nd Story with upcoming shows such as Dangerous Corner, a gripping thriller, Neighborhood Watch, a comedy set in the home of a psychoanalyst, and Story Theater, a play derived from Grimm’s Fairy tales. “We’re excited to collaborate with our good friends, RI’s acclaimed […]
With the haze of summer TV reruns and reality shows like “American Idol,” “America’s Got Talent” and “So You Think You Can Dance?” all becoming one in the same, it’s high time for some live entertainment. Luckily, even as the calendar warns of the impending change in seasons, area dance companies are ready for a […]
Rhode Island is unique for many reasons — quahogs, bubblahs and our tight-knit theater community. However, if you’re new to this amazing area, you can be overwhelmed with all the choices. From a Theatre by the Sea to a 2nd Story, where are you supposed to begin? Have no fear, dear new Rhode Islander. Rhode Island […]
Elaborately and creatively choreographed dance in an Elizabethan style is the highlight of Head Trick Theatre’s outdoor production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It. Because most of this light comedy is set in a forest, it is one of the most popular Shakespeare plays for in-the-park performance. I’ve seen at least a dozen versions over […]
In the Heights is a Lin Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegria Hudes Tony award winning musical. I don’t get up to NYC as much as I would like, so I sat down to watch Academy’s production not knowing what to expect. The set was not only fitting, but clever as well, as it doubled as […]
The Burbage Theatre Company, now fully ensconced in their downtown location at Aurora, is winding down the summer in Providence with a brief Repertory presentation. Red Light Winter by Adam Rapp is being alternately performed with Love Song by John Kolvenback. I attended Love Song, a charming, energetic, yet somewhat unsettling dark comedy. The space […]
Being a Broadway musical fan as well as a movie buff has paid handsome dividends in recent years as movies, particularly comedies, have been adapted for the stage on a now predictable basis. We’re at the point where it’s becoming increasingly difficult, especially for younger audiences, to trace the origins of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels or […]
