It’s been a looooong winter, so you’re likely itching to take it outside. Here’s a great way to put cabin fever in the rear-view mirror: head to the 6th Annual Newport Craft Beer Festival, which is happening on Saturday, April 29, at the Great Friends Meeting House. Soak in the sun (hopefully, but worry not […]
If you live in Rhode Island, chances are a winery is not too far away. In fact, it will take a couple of days to be able to visit the Ocean State’s nine wineries. For both location and style, spend one day along the eastern part of the state, following the Coastal Trail route. Then […]
Ballast Point Nitro Red Velvet – I’m two for two on “golden stouts” lately. I wonder if this is going to be the new trend. It sounds ridiculous, but really, it’s not any sillier than white IPAs or the endless barrage of pumpkin beers. Although in keeping with the theme of, “What on God’s Earth […]
A fermenter full of hopes and dreams and beer-making business plans is finally becoming a reality at 461 Main St in Pawtucket. The address is the home of Isle Brewers Guild (IBG), the self-proclaimed “craft beer cooperative,” which provides manufacturing, packaging and distribution solutions in a state-of-the-art facility for its brewing partners who are striving to […]

Stony Creek Golden Mocha Stout I’ve never met a Stony Joe before. I’ve met a Stoner Joe, but I doubt this is going to be even remotely like that encounter. For one thing, I don’t have the munchies. Stony Creek, our beer-making friends from just over the state border, have come up with one of […]
Before we get to the locals, we have a scooplette from across the border: Wormtown Brewery, straight outta Worcester, Massachusetts, will start distributing in Rhode Island (via Elevated Spirits) real soon. Managing partner David Fields told us that their flagship IPA, Be Hoppy, will be available on draft-only the first week of April – “We […]
To play along with the fun of the Motif Tattoo Issue, we asked local beer professionals to tell us about their [mostly] brew-related ink. Let’s roll up some sleeves… At Newport Storm, co-founder/brewmaster Derek Luke has the Hurricane symbol from the brewery’s logo on his arm. Theresa Malafronte, the Storm PR/events coordinator, says, “He got […]
At the risk of making a commercial jingle break out, who else out there could use a break? 2016 seemed to be the year nothing could go right, and 2017 is looking to be the direct-to-video sequel. We all just had quite a bit of snow dumped on us, and in general the weather is […]
