Full Furnish Ahead: Furniture Bank of Rhode Island helps people make their house a home

Moving can be an exciting time with a fresh start, but it also comes with an incredible amount of stress. There is a lot that needs to be added to the checklist and there are usually some added expenses. Some people start their new journey with all of their previous belongings, while others need to furnish their new home from the ground up. For those individuals, the Furniture Bank of Rhode Island can be an important resource.

“We do good work here,” says a store supervisor who requested her name be withheld. “ Customers pay 80% less than other furniture stores.”

The Furniture Bank of Rhode Island is open to the public, regardless of income. The nonprofit organization especially aims to serve low-income families, single parents, victims of fire and those transitioning from shelters to their first home. They receive a lot of donations, which enables them to make every item affordable. All items in the store are individually priced. Some are free, with the most expensive one being $350. They offer delivery for $50, but the items need to be brought inside by the inhabitants.

“There’s a little bit for everybody,” the store supervisor says of the inventory. “Lots of people come to take advantage of our affordable prices.”

People on state assistance are eligible for an additional 40% off the already discounted prices. Individuals need to bring an ID and proof of assistance in order to receive the discount.

“We have everything at a discounted price. It’s great for single parents. They can get what they need instead of going to a regular store.”

The furniture bank is affiliated with Jordan’s Furniture. The furniture mogul makes monthly donations to best help people suffering through difficult times. The other furniture comes from mostly individual donations. This gives the bank a revolving menu of inventory.

“People appreciate the service we provide. Many love to come here to see what we have in stock. Some come every day.” •
