Album Of The Week: Public Access T.V.’s Never Enough

unnamed-26As with every genre, power pop has its contenders and pretenders. There are some acts where some guy is blatantly ripping off Alex Chilton while his band tries to be a fraction of the greatness Big Star embodied. Others just do their own thing while resonating rhythms that make people dance. That’s what Public Access T.V. has going on with their debut Never Enough. This quartet from New York City brings that sly charisma that The Cars had in the late ’70s along with possessing a contemporary edge.

Frontman John Eatherly makes rock ‘n’ roll cool again with smooth lyrics and an effortless allure. The anchor for Public Access T.V.’s sound lies within the lead guitar skills of Xan Aird. His tone is impeccable and it provides an incredible force to a band that already has plenty of energy behind it. That particular force can’t exist without feeding off the rhythms, and that’s what bassist Max Peebles and drummer Pete Star inject. Never Enough is a shining introduction to an up-and-coming act that’s on the road to bigger things.

Since the band’s inception in 2014, Public Access T.V. have shared the stage with acts like The Strokes, Weezer and Gang Of Four. With that kind of resume, it’s only a matter of time until these guys start going head to head with the heavyweights of indie rock. Do you have your doubts? Don’t fool yourself. Once the ears absorb the brilliance of Never Enough there’s no denying. Let’s find some reasons why with my top tracks off of my Album Of The Week:

The hit off of Never Enough has to be “End Of An Era.” It’s a generational song with Eatherly singing about how people say that the kids these days have outgrown rock ‘n’ roll. Those people should listen to the opening riff and they’ll probably change their minds. A rhythmically raucous track is “In Our Blood;” there’s a bit of noise at the start that’ll have the senses hooked. Another rager is “In Love And Alone” that has Eartherly oozing his guts out.

Public Access T.V. just celebrated the release of Never Enough at the Mercury Lounge in New York City on September 23, but they’ll be heading to the United Kingdom soon. That tour starts at The Crofters Rights in Bristol on October 23 and it ends at the Moth Club in London on November 2. Let’s hope they hit up a venue in New England when they head back across the pond. Until then, get your hands on the debut album from Public Access T.V. It’s one of the best albums to come out so far in 2016, so give it a listen and find out why.
