2026 PVDFest is the can’t-miss local event this weekend; one of the biggest fests of the year for our city-state. This year reprises last year’s footprint, encompassing Kennedy Plaza with three stages and reaching out through Mathewson St. The Ice Rink will not only have a stage again this year, but it will also continue as the only drink-friendly outdoor space at the fest; although, of course, all your favorite eating and drinking establishments will be serving too. As someone who had to try to chug 6 Gansetts last year, let me assure you, they will not let you leave the rink with a drink.
This year also promises more, bigger tents than previous years, in an abundance of caution born of sudden deluges that seem to stalk the proceedings many years – but this year is showing nice warm days with (per weather.com) only a 24% chance of rain on Friday and a scant 2% on Saturday. We know RI artists love to defy the odds, but fingers are crossed for a lovely outdoor experience.
Headliners
La Excellencia is a NYC-based group combining 70s-style salsa with modern influences and strong social justice messages. They’re anchoring Friday night at City Hall at 7pm.
Stay Silent is a PVD staple, with a number of ground-shaking hip-hop concerts throughout the year. These Luv U Better Block Party DJs will focus on R&B sounds across history, exploring their intersections with hip-hop at the Ice Rink stage on Friday, from 5 -10pm.
Butch Tavares, a founding member of the iconic R&B group Tavares, will be debuting new music to tentpole Saturday on the main stage at City Hall in the late afternoon. His new release, “Maybe Just for Love,” will be featured.
Big Freedia, the big attraction this year, will wrap up the event starting at 8:30pm on the main stage. Hailing from N’Orleans, the Queen of Bounce is internationally known for shows that keep crowds in high-energy dance mode. This promises to be the kind of show you remember for a lifetime. There will be twerking.

Festival producers at the City and First Works made a more concerted effort to acknowledge some of the exceptional talent we already have here in the area. “I’m thrilled by some of the traveling acts – what’s better than bringing Big Freedia to Providence,” says Program Director Chris Hoyt of FirstWorks, “But the City also gave us room to consider more of the amazing local talent.”

Of course, If you see only one thing at PVDFest this year, we recommend the annual RI Battle of the Bands conducted by yours truly, Motif. OK, we may be biased, but – Preliminary rounds have been going on all summer at sponsoring venues across the city like Club Medici, Fete Music Hall, Track 15, and Narragansett Brewery. These finalists have seen some action at this point, and they know how to bring it. Seriously, not one of these bands failed to blow my mind in the early rounds: We’ve got Maintenance, a young indie rock band from Bristol that knows how to emo; I’m Not Crying, You’re Crying, a more seasoned set of local true rock veterans with a hint of acid rock; Lainey Dionne, a pop icon-in-the-making whose stories and lyrics are next-level; And Teevio and the Aces, a truly youthful quartet that found themselves and each other on The Search RI last year and created an R&B / rock hybrid from existing acts. Seeing them all throw down will be a fantastic, I-saw-them-when experience.
