Favorite Free Verse Spoken Word 2026

Ashley Hosa

Sending out a big congrats to Ashley Hosa, who came to the Spoken Awards with a multitude of wonderful supporters (shoutout to Ryan!). During the post-announcement interview, Ashley stated, “I came here not knowing what was going to happen, and this is just such an incredible feeling. I’m thankful and proud and just really grateful.” They also raved about the positive, welcoming environment that the spoken artists have created in RI. Keep an eye out for their queer sci-fi novel that they’ve got in the works!

Favorite Social Justice Spoken Word 2026 / Most Spoken Votes Overall, First Runner Up

Erik Andrade

Since 1999, Erik has used his voice on stage to speak on social justice, viewing his actions as a threat to power. “They don’t attack your weakness, they attack your strength… So the fact that they’re attacking it, if that’s their threat that they see, then we have to lean into that,” he explains. Living in a community where his existence has become marginalized, Erik’s outspokenness stems from his refusal to be pushed into a box. That has become a main source of motivation and inspiration for his art. “My identity is tied around making a difference in some form or fashion, and through my art it really is a positive thing to get that affirmation.”

Favorite Youth Poet 2026

Astrid Santos

A high-school senior from Providence who typically shares poetry written in the style of other authors, Astrid enjoys performing aspects of their thoughts and experiences while incorporating her own interpretations. Her advice to other spoken artists is “to do everything with love.” This year, she was a National Finalist in the Poetry Out Loud competition held by the National Endowment of the Arts, and has served as RI’s official Youth Poet. We all look forward to seeing what the future holds for her.

Favorite Poetry Event 2026

Apothica’s Monthly Poetry Night

Organized by Favorite Producer victor Jessica Sullivan, this monthly night has gained a lot of traction very quickly. It’s intimate, cozy vibe has resonated with local creatives. It’s a bit off the beaten path, geographically and attitudinally. The free, caffeine-driven evening takes place at three Dexter St, Cumberland. “Guests can enjoy a curated menu of plant-based food and specialty drinks, including our signature espresso martinis and seasonal offerings, all crafted to complement the atmosphere of the night.” What pairs culinarily with existential dread? I plan to show up and ask Jess.
“Come share your voice, support local artists, or settle in and experience the energy of live poetry in a warm, inclusive setting. No pressure, just good people, thoughtful expression, and a space to connect,” Jess says. Learn more and follow their calendar at apothicaherbs.com/events-art-gallery.

Favorite Producer / Organizer 2026

Jessica Sullivan

A well known local rabble-rouser and spoken word aficionado, Jess Sullivan produces a number of events around RI, including the popular poetry nights at Apotheca Café. Asked about her award for favorite producer, Jess said, “It feels incredible. We actually hit our one-year mark in April. So to hear this coming around and to be nominated for this was just icing on the cake and it was really amazing. So, I’m speechless.” For those who know Jess’ speaking prowess, “Speechless” is a truly impressive testimonial.
“[The owners of Apothica couldn’t make it tonight] but they are the owners of a polka café. So they were like, ‘If you want to host, go for it.’ And they really believed in me, so I’m hoping to collaborate on a few more things.”
Jess is also a barista at Apothica as well as a gardener, hiker, professional videographer, enthusiastic rollerblader, and far more than we can fit in these pages.

Chachi Carvalho

Hip-hop artist and educator Carvalho takes great pride in representing Cape Verde and Pawtucket. Some of his inspirations include Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, and Heavy D. Chachi’s also well known for giving back to the community by educating and uplifting the youth, inspiring them to embrace art, music and culture. Carvalho performs regularly at special events around the state, and coordinates the Culture Shock musical event annually.

Favorite Live Spoken Word Performance

Suleimen

A spoken word performer who casts a wide net among the poetry nights of RI, Suleimen presents an authentic voice on the stage. Sharing deep thoughts in an often curious or even incredulous shell, he especially impressed the audience by solving a Rubik’s Cube while reciting poetry about balance and problem solving and stacking. It’s not a new trick by local poetry standards, but it is a very impressive one and he did it one-handed, bringing home a narrow victory over veteran Alisha Pina in the live performance. When Suleimen steps up to the mic, there is always a sense of anticipation, and he’s an exciting and appreciated presence at numerous open mics and shows around the state.

Favorite Comedian 2026

Tyrone Jones

“It just means that they’re aware of what I am to the scene, the hard work, the mentorship, the creativity, my energy, my enthusiasm, my passion, my creativity that they see it. And they recognize it, and I’m gonna keep going,” the inspiring comedian says of his selection this year.
“I’m gonna keep becoming better than I ever was. I’m not even scratching the surface. I love the scene here.” Tyrone’s career goal is to hone his skills in eccentric, supportive RI and move to national stages in the coming years – “Three more years. It’s a good scene, it’s relatable. Let’s all laugh about it, and let’s strive to be better. You know, I’m not the coolest comedian. I’m not the most confident one. But I’m still trying to be, and if you feel that way, I’m your guy. The desire, the hunger, the chase – I love that all.” Jones is working on an album that he hopes will be his magnum opus. “That one classic album – that’s my goal. Like Richard Pryor, I got the Sunset Strip.” Only, in Rhode Island. See more of Jones at fb.com/tyrone.jones.587

Comedian, artist, activist, and father who knows just how to get a crowd going. He’s built up an impressive following with his energetic stand-up, appearing at various venues throughout New England. To all his supporters, he says, “Thanks to all the people on Facebook, and all the people on Instagram. I don’t have a website, and I’m still booming. You know what I mean? So shout out to the people of Rhode Island and shout out to my family.” The Brooklyn-bred RI resident is raw and honest in his humor, which covers cultural distinctions and reinvents dad jokes for a whole new generation of parents. You can usually catch him performing at Medici on Wednesdays, along with other performances posted to his instagram @blaqsav

Comedy New Voice 2026

Lucas Estrella

Most people tend to shy away from their awkward personalities, but Lucas manages to lean into it while delivering hilarious performances. At the recent Spoken Awards, the 18-year-old comic kept the crowd laughing with his quirky recounts of frisbee physique and teenage romance. Celebrating the win on his instagram @lucasestrellacomedy, he wrote, “Won the Motif New Voice in Comedy award, will be my second award – first was my 1st grade basketball participation trophy! Thank you!” You’re very welcome, Lucas.

Favorite Interactive Storyteller 2026 / Favorite Night-of Live Storytelling Performance

Rudy Ru

Rudy Ru is a Trinity Rep actor and a vibrant storyteller who always captivates the crowd with his charisma, so this award comes as no surprise. After receiving his award, he stated, “At the end of the day, when I wasn’t winning, the one thing that I did always tell myself is that the win is actually the nomination. It is to be in. That’s really the win because you’re being recognized regardless.” When asked what kind of advice he’d give to other spoken artists, he said, “Just keep grinding and don’t sell yourself short. Don’t allow yourself to say you can’t do something until you give it a shot. Because why not? You don’t have anything to lose.”

Favorite Cultural / Historical Storyteller 2026

Mark Binder

For over 20 years, Binder has shared his stories with the world for one reason: to transmit joy. “Because joy, I think, is something you can’t get over the internet.” His rousing performance of a personal political sea-shanty roused the entire audience at the awards show, inspiring hundreds to stomp and clap in unison (see page 17 for the lyrics). Much of his storytelling revolves around Jewish cultural heritage stories, often set in the mythical town of Chelm. Whether he is performing in a packed theater, nightclub, garage or basement, he strives to reach audiences of all ages and backgrounds. “When you’re with somebody in person, and they’re sharing a story with you, you remember who you are and who they are…you get a feeling of community.”

Favorite Personal Storyteller 2026

Mx Asher

Before finding their voice in spoken word, Mx Asher’s career delved into government, elections, and advocacy. Their work in this field has created the foundation for their art, exploring social issues as an act of advocacy as well as storytelling. “I wasn’t expecting to even be nominated in personal storytelling, but I’m beyond the moon that I was recognized.” Their transparency with their experiences about being transgender, neurodivergent, and a sexual assault survivor allows their storytelling to be raw and vulnerable. “I think,” they tell Motif, “Really just taking those bits of the stories and making a longer narrative from the very beginning is where I go next.”

Favorite Storytelling Event 2026

The half-bookstore, half-bar atmosphere provides a cozy, alternative vibe where they host a variety of events such as monthly trivia, open mic nights, and film screenings in the courtyard. The crossover open mics with LitArts draw alternative, literate fans with an appreciation for the fine points of language. In between performances, be sure to check out the staff picks section. It’s where I found my favorite book of all time, so I highly recommend it.

Her presence and contributions to the RI creative scenes are deeply respected and appreciated by poets, comedians, storytellers and creatives alike. Mr. Orange Live

As the executive producer of the non-profit Tell Your Truth and Program Director of Poetry Out Loud, he strives to give young poets a space to boost their voices and feel confident in their craft. “Support locally, support nationally, support regionally.
