Say hello to another edition of Stop, Rock n Roll! We’re back in quick succession with some local releases, several of which are from recent winners of various Motif Music Awards. Check out these homegrown hits!
Nel Fuoco – “Ciao Baby”

Over a slick beat, local rapper Nel Fuoco drops bars that ooze confidence, even switching between multiple languages. Each line is delivered with bravado and personality, not only sticking the landing in regards to flow but also making sure that the song stands out and stays fun to listen to throughout. Fuoco is quickly making a name for herself in the ever-competitive local rap scene.
Meera Raphael – “Read Me”

Lightly strummed acoustic guitars make the listener think they’re in for a song straight out of a coffee shop. However, the song takes a sharp turn into ’90s alt-rock with crunchy guitars and verses that walk a fine line between singing and spoken word. Her use of dynamics helps keep the song fresh while showing off her impressive lyric-writing skills and versatile voice. Not afraid to cut loose, she grabs the listener’s attention and makes sure she leaves an impression.
Free Beer the Band – “Back to You”

Free Beer have been kicking up a storm in the local music scene, recently winning WXIN’s Rock Hunt BOTB. Their newest single, “Back to You,” puts on full display why they’re so popular. The song starts with mellow guitars and dusky vocals highly reminiscent of Red Hot Chili Peppers. As the rest of the band kicks in, the song goes full rap-rock, infusing the beachy feel of the chord progression with some head-nodding energy. This mixture of vibes is a clear indicator of why the band is such an acclaimed live act.
Throwing Muses – “Summer of Love”

There’s a very clear image that comes to mind when people think of the term “Summer of Love.” This song goes in a completely different direction. Down-tuned acoustic guitars, cello, and hushed vocals conjure up more of an “Autumn of Paranoia,” which makes the song even more interesting. Towards the end, moody cellos blend nicely with distorted electric guitar lines. It’s very cool to see these ’90s alt rock stalwarts continuing to innovate and experiment three decades on.
Sun Urchins – “Daffodils”

One of the coolest indie bands in the state has released their debut album, Glow in the Dark. Lead single “Daffodils” serves as a perfect introduction to the LP, sounding as if it came straight off the 10 Things I Hate About You soundtrack. The song starts at a 10 and never comes down, barreling forward with reckless abandon while somehow also staying poised. Pop sensibilities meet punk energy for loud indie joy, and if you like that, then boy, will you like the rest of the album! •
