The streets of Providence will run red with Midwest Blood as Expire take over Firehouse 13 on Sunday, October 5. The last time they played Providence was over two years ago, so this is long overdue. With the release of their second full-length studio album, Pretty Low, in June, the band has been touring nonstop. […]
Black Lips, this crazy psychedelic garage rock act from Atlanta, Georgia, are going to perform up the highway at The Paradise Rock Club in Boston on September 28 with Montreal punks The King Khan & BBQ Show. I had a chat with co-founder, bassist and co-vocalist of Black Lips, Jared Swilley, about the upcoming show and […]
Boiling in the depths of the Providence music scene is pure intensity. Regardless of genre, nothing is sugarcoated and everything is as real as your senses tell you. A wonderful example of this trademark has to be Sean Murphy. He’s fronted hardcore punk revolutionaries Verse and lo-fi shoegaze punk act Bad Swimmers, and now this […]
Some of my earliest music listening memories consist of sitting around the RCA console stereo/color television set in the family room, blindly going through my parents’ record collection. A 5-year-old has a severely limited reference when it comes to musical tastes, so whatever I found in that milk crate instantly became my indelible starting-point. And […]
If you delve deep enough, you’d be surprised how artistically and musically weird Oklahoma can get. Psychedelic dream punks The Flaming Lips started out there and The Philbrook Museum of Art, located in Tulsa, is one of the finest museums in the country. There’s also an up-and-coming rock ‘n’ roll act coming through the tumbleweeds to […]
Ryan Adams has made a career doing pretty much whatever he wants. As a young man, he became an alt-country icon, mostly for his work with his band Whiskytown, but has since gone on to explore a variety of genres, even making forays in punk rock and metal. His new album, Ryan Adams, marks the […]
When a band takes a decade to put out the follow-up to their debut album, it can either ruin high expectations or keep things fresh so they can create a gem. Drum & bass dance-punks Death From Above 1979 have put out The Physical World, the duo’s first album since the release of their debut […]
World premieres are a rarity, and are especially uncommon in smaller cities like Providence. Even more unusual is to have two world premieres by the same composer in the same small city within the same year. When I last spoke with composer Steven Jobe in May, it was days before the inaugural performance of his […]
Music has such a wide variety of sound and styles it’s hard to capture everything a band or musician has to offer under one specific genre. Hardcore is no exception. With influences from metal, punk, grindcore, ska, death and thrash metal along with all the anger and politics thrown together, it creates what we can […]
The summer may be over, but the party doesn’t have to be. Venues anticipate a back-to-school extravaganza to happen and promoters, graphic artists, DJs, bouncers, dancers and bartenders are all geared to make it successful for everyone. Most work to glamorize the night life to its fullest potential and a heavy booking schedule is now […]
