There’s really nothing like hearing a pristine, raucous, bluesy rock ‘n’ roll record. I can never put my finger on what makes it so damn good, but it definitely has something to do with it being loud, raw and no-holds-barred. This is where guitar whiz kid Benjamin Booker comes into play. The phenom from The […]
Durham, North Carolina based folk rockers Beloved Binge will be stopping in RI on their country wide tour. The couple, who describe their music as, “rubble pop in a punk pot,” have been compared to Olympia, WA indie record label k-records, placing them somewhere in the ranks of indie folkies and shoegaze rockers. Beloved Binge […]
Picked up the pieces while waiting for The $3 Bar to re-open and figured I’d recap the Newport Folk Festival. To attempt to recap the state’s biggest annual music event that featured three seven-hour days of live music happening concurrently on four stages in one paragraph is probably foolish, but I’m going to do it […]
Okee dokee folks … As I mentioned last month the summer shows are plenty. I have managed to get to quite a few so far and have many more to attend. One commonality I have noticed among the performers is that a lot of these folks are getting old, some very old. I guess I […]
Little Rhody is a tiny state, but I am willing to bet we have more songwriters per capita than any other. Afloat this summer in our vast pool of dedicated and talented singer songwriters is Mary Ellen Casey. Mary Ellen is not new to songwriting. She has been writing and performing for years. Like many […]

The best success a band can have is through consistency. I’m not talking about playing the same style in each album you put out, but instead putting out quality music while not being afraid to push boundaries and try new things. Coming a long way from the lo-fi punkish alternative rock sound of their debut […]
By: Josh Estrella There are a few bands that stand out when you hear them– bands you know are going to make it big–and Kongos are definitely one of them. Last Friday all those gathered in Waterplace Park for the fifth installment of WBRU’s Summer Concert Series had the opportunity to hear their unique African […]
On the stage is your favorite artist. Behind them their light show bedazzles. Their bass blasts through some of the heaviest speakers in the industry, sending wave after wave through an audience of thousands who know every word and melody. EDM artists are today’s rock stars. Forget the guitars and drums — everything is a […]
