Blue Bug Blues

George Cardono, the creator of our beloved Nibbles Woodaway (better known as the Big Blue Bug), died last week at the age of 88. Nibbles was the result of a brainstorming session Cardono had with the founders of the eponymously named Big Blue Bug Solutions. Their intent was to create something that would stand out from the forest of billboards dotted along the 95 corridor, and it’s been an Ocean State icon ever since.

While the 58-foot, 4,000-pound, $30,000 termite lives in our heads rent-free, its creator, Mr. Cardono, paid his own way. During his career, he founded ad agencies, sold real estate and worked in a MASH unit in the Korean War.

Farewell, George.
